It's easier to fit the cylinder with the bike on a lift and no rear wheel so you can climb inside the space. Use a hook type tool to hold the spring.

A little update.... I was going to go with a red, white and blue theme but the bike was fighting me tooth and nail. Guess it didn't want to be that color. So I went another route.

Laughed when I read the comment about the master cylinder.. I'm doing a 76 t140- my first Brit bike and they've got some crazy ways of connecting stuff . Good luck n your build,

Well now that the holidays are behind us, I was able to make a little more progress...Powder coated the tank emblems, primary cover, rocker box covers, carb intakes and oil feed. polished out the engine covers, installed new engine cover gaskets and replaced all bolts with stainless.
