'68 TR6R USA rebuild

OK so where to begin....
Bought this bike a few weeks ago from a seller in the coastal area of Durban (750km away). Bought it after seeing a few pics and a short vid clip and had it trailered up tp joburg.
1. Previous owner had done a half assed job of restoring it by repainting the frame, side panels, tank and mudguards. All drain plugs were left in place and painted over as well as not being standard. The tank pads were painted on! %$$%
2. The bike was running (sort of) when I got it but the left cyclinder kept cutting out under load. Eventually found that the left coil wire was wired to + and not -. Switched wires and went for a spin. Much better but quite a bit of smoke out of the exhausts.
3. Carb is WRONG. There's a AMAL 375/4 monoblock carb fitted (from a '55 BSA C11) 20mm bore.
4. Most of the chrome is rusted. Including mufflers (sh%t)

Thats the start of it.....

I've now stripped the head and barrel and found that the pistons are GPM's and it's been bored out to 0.04". Measured ring gap at top and bottom of bores and they seem ok. Left was 0.58mm bottom and 0.63 top. Right was 0.6mm bottom and 0.65 top. So both had a difference of 0.05mm which is within the quoted figure of 0.13mm out of the manual. Next I will borrow an inside mic and check again.
Likewise I checked the pistons in the cylinder and the measurements are in spec.
I did notice some pitting on the R bore. I would guess that the bike stood for awhile and this is what caused it??
I have attached some pics of the barrels, pistons and rockers. Please feel free to offer any advise as you see fit (I'm a total noobe at this) so any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome Silverfish,
Great looking bike. Doesn't look like it needs much.
So what are your intentions for this bike? Do you plan to go over it completely or just get it running well and enjoy it?

That is the first time I've seen knee pads painted on. I bet if you put a real pair over the painted pair it would look kind of cool.

Thanks for the welcome Ohio.
I plan on breaking it right down and rebuiling to stock. This is going to be a looong term project as importing goods to South Africa can be quite expensive.
Just checked the manual and I think the rings are worn out of spec.

Quetion: Will the numbers quoted in the manual apply to the GPM piston and rings. ie. the procedure for checking worn rings. The book says anything over 0.014" (0.3556mm) neads relacing. Mine measured 0.63mm...

For what a new set of rings will cost, I would just replace them. Lots of guys here brighter than me. These guys can talk you thru just about anything.

If the max gap is 0.35 and your at 0.63 then your nearly double the
max wear limit. Thats a sure bet as to why its smoking.
The pitting in the cylinder concerns me as well. If you can hone the
pits out and stay in spec, Then do that. If not, time for a rebore.
There are much better pistons out there as well.

Ohio:
I am planning on replacing them! Perhaps even the pistons. Once I mic the bores I will know for sure.

shrugger:
My thoughts too, but what throws me off is that the rings don't seem to be blowing oil!!!
Can you rebore above 0.04"? The books stops at that figure?

Thanks for the advice guys! please keep it coming

It's possible I suppose. But I wouldn't recommend it.
Good excuse for a Morgo 750.
Anyway, hone it first and see where your at.
