Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what type of paint to use when re-painting frame, rims, components, etc...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Rust-O-Leum rattle cans work okay, but I prefer to powdercoat the entire chassis.

I'd prefer powder coat myself. But I don't know your budget.
I hear folks have used Hammerite to good effect on frames.
The plain gloss, not the hammered metal type

Thanks for your help!

My plan at the moment is to powdercoat the frame after sandblasting.

I'm not sure what to do with the nacelle, oil tank, toolbox cover, etc...

I wonder if they are strong enough to be sandblasted and welded to repair cracks.

If your going to Sand blast yourself for powdercoat. Don't use
standard silicate(sp?) blasting media. It doesn't react well to the
coating when they're heated.

Although it might sound weird, I have had the best results with a good scrubbing, some wire wheel brushes and after getting down to either bare metal or paint that is stuck well....

I just get a brush and paint it with "Armour Coat rust paint" gloss black. It is a slow dry and makes for a hard coating. Better than any rattle can and I think looks as good as powder-coat. It flows well and all brush stokes flow into an even coating. The can is in a 16 ounce size and sells for 8 bucks, it is a great paint to have available for any number of jobs.

I use it to undercoat old fenders etc. All the frames I have stripped down get this as the coating. Its cheap and if not to your liking, you have only invested less than the cost of one rattle can.

I guarantee you can find a myriad of uses for it both in the auto/cycle world as well as all kinds of household uses. I certainly prefer it over rattle cans, and I would prefer it to powder-coating (only due to my Scottish nature). I would think powder-coating is best, but I can buy lots of other parts I need with the money saved by not paying for powder-coating.

Mike

That's what a lot of us used to use before powdercoat became widely (and cheaply) available. It gives a pretty good finish, I would still use it if I was building a budget hack. But for a full resto I would say powdercoat is the way to go these days.

Hi Don,
Personally, I would go for bead blasting (plastic media), sand works well for the thicker parts such as the frame. The problem with sand is that it stays intact when it hits the surface and very slightly peens it. Plastic on the other hand disintegrates when it hits the surface so is much more gentle. I've had very good results using plastic on aluminium and thin steel parts such as my seat pan which I also had MIG welded.

I hope this helps

has anyone done a black powder coat with a clear over it? i ask because the powdercoater i am using (dropped the parts off yesterday) does a lot of harley work/custom build stuff and offers a 2 stage p.c. proccess that is a bit more expensive than just the standard gloss black where they bake on a powdercoated clear over the base. i am told it makes a very deep finish but they didn't have any parts in the shop to illustrate. has anyone done it before?
