Gerry's 72 Bonneville re-build

Hi all,
This is the start of my restoration thread for my 72 Bonneville.
I have attached a couple photos.
There are a few more photos here...
http://s669.photobucket.com/albums/v...23bsr/Triumph/

I am a complete noob when it comes to old Triumphs. I had a 72 Norton 750 Interstate just out of high school back in 75, the engine seized and I sold it. A few years later I picked up a 74 Norton 850 High Rider. I switched out the handle bars and the seat for a more standard style as soon as I could. Let me tell you, the Norton High Rider was an odd looking version of an otherwise beautiful bike.
All that was over 30 years ago LOL. I have had various other bike over the years.

Well back to the present...
This bike was complete and for the most part assembled w/ matching numbers, the carbs, front fender, tack and triumph chain guard came in a box.
I want the bike to look almost new with a two color paint scheme similar to the way they were painted in 71-72. I'm partial to a blue primary with silver teardrop (is that the right term?) on the tank and silver fenders
I am thinking on taking this path to restoring the Bonneville...
Spend the winter dismantling down to the frame. Put the engine and transmission assemblies off to the side and one at a time concentrate on re-furbishing the frame, tank, fenders, front rim and brakes, rear rim and brakes, forks, electrical, etc.
My goal is to have a 80% re-stored rolling chassis, all painted w/ new tires by spring. Then I will have someone look at the engine and figure out how to proceed with that.
I plan on taking pictures and documenting as much as I can and posting here.
Thanks for all the help and advice I have received all ready and in the future
Gerry

Looks like a fairly complete "Umber-Sled".

What was the story on how it was last running?

My advice is to manage a schedule where you do as few parts orders as possible. Just the cost of extra postage will pay for your tires in the long run.

I believe it was last running in 1981. Been sitting since then.

Thanks for advice on the batch part orders, makes good sense.
Speaking of which, Paul can you recommend a good supplier or two.
I have just barely begun to scratch the surface here reading and searching... I have seen mention a couple of suppliers but need to get into it deeper.

Looks like a nice project Gerry,

I like the idea of your paint job, I've done something similar on my 72 that I've been building since January. Have a look at the photos, they should give you an idea what your bike would look like in Blue/Silver. I've based mine on a 65 colour scheme but with 69 shape scallops.
The tank will look better once the badges are fitted.

Good Luck with the rebuild

Thanks Plewsy,
When I brought it home on Sat. I sat there looking at it and poking around and thought "I wonder what it would take to see if it runs" started adding things up in my head and abandoned the idea :-)

Hey Webby, your tank looks great, so does the rest of the re-build. I want to do the silver scallops like you did but I saw a bike on the web somewhere (for the life of me I can't find it now) that had a lighter shade of blue with the silver scallops. I thought I would do the fenders in silver too but after seeing your bike with the blue fenders maybe not?
