73 TR7RV - top end or all rebuild

Alright, i'm looking for opinions.
1973 tiger tr7rv...750cc.

Motor was taken apart due to hollow tin tin top end noises ...mainly on left side. I have no vertical wrist pin wear and no lower end bearing wear...both stated from physical feel not visual or measured observations. Cylinders look pretty good... i'm used to 2 stroke honda 125 motorcycles... Pictures say a thousand words... should i..

a. hone cylinders, put new pistons and rings
b. bring to well repuitable shop for an estimated $1500 complete rebuild bottom up.

I do love the bike and don't plan on selling it... the $1500 is steep and i would rather rebuild the top end only... but i also want to make the right decision and not have to take this thing apart in a short time.

Thank You
Zach

I'd just do the pistons. If there is no play in the rods, etc. why fix what's not broken? If you are sure of the miles and the past engine work, I'd keep the coin.

It really isn't much more work to pull the cases apart and refresh the bearings.
Ask yourself: Where did all the metal from the pistons scraping the cylinder walls go?

I would mike the bores see if they need a rebore if not hone them and fit new pistons and rings and go for it. The bore may be worn and the pistons rocking in the bore, $1500 for a top end job is highway robbery. Gearhead

$1,500 for top and bottom rebuild? Definately on the low end from the limited information Ive seen on rebuild costs. May I ask what shop quoted you that and what that includes. E.g. is that for a basic rebuild and may have to add on depending on what they find once they look?
Keep us posted -- ill be looking to do something similar soon.
Cheers.

Back in the UK look to spend £4000+ for a full rebuild by top name company. Did have 4 pages of A4 listing the parts replaced/upgraded though.

Ok... i need assistance... obviously i do not want to drop the big $$ on the motor if i don't need to.

I have taken each piston off and made an attempt to get mic'd numbers off of them...i have put them skirt first into the bottom of the cylinder and find a good amount of play...

Now i have attached some more pics... i'm trying to figure out if these are suposed to be standard bore pistons or if they are oversize....the only markings i can find on the pistons are "T1176" and a number #1 under one piston and a #5 under the other..

I have an old Clymer manual... and do not find it user friendly

thanks

that's just the casting # , normally the pistons are marked on the crown , the top , under all that carbon they should be stamped .
