1949 - Triumph Tiger 100

Hi Hi Everyone -

My first post! Let me start with,

My grandpa is the type who grew up in Canada (Ontario) and ripped apart and reassembled British bikes all his life. Still doin it now. Currently he is so tied up with working on his Crosley (car this time.. google it - its a goodie) that he is not able to work on his Tiger 100.

Because I ride (suzuki c50) and am toying with rippin apart another bike (yamaha xs400) he thought I'd be the one to take this Triumph off his hands.

I plan on making this forum a big part of my web surfin from now for a while now that I am gladly a Triumph guy (well.... soon to be.. once it runs heh..

-- He thinks its the Magneto that isn't sparking. The bike turns over, but isn't getting fire. I've searched the internet for any replacement/fix options for a new Mag but am not seeing too much.

Of course if this is answered on the site - i apologize for a duplicate thread - i searched, and will continue searching in the mean time however.

THanks for havin me here guys! Look forward to 'hangin out'

Hey Kenny, welcome.

Sounds like you have a great interest in bikes, that's always good. Welcome to TRAT. we have many sub forums, and I hope you will explore them all.

This particular one is mainly about the modern Hinckley Triumphs made from 2000 onwards, but we have some very knowledgeable folks in our vintage / veteran section who may know more about the tiger, so for now I will slide this thread over there. You are welcome in all forums though! Have a good one!

Howdy.

There used to be a saying in the business world (maybe still is?) "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM (computers)"

Well, nobody ever goes wrong buying a Joe Hunt magneto. PERIOD.

They are a bit fiddly to set on some of the old pre-units, but they have simple directions.

Welcome.

You can find the old lucas or bth mags on ebay but chances are they are not any better than the one you have. The weak point if you want to call it that with these mags is the oil seal on rhe shaft, pull the plug leads off the mag and look inside the holes you will see the pick up rotor oil fumes from the engine will build up on this rotor and you will loose fire its more of a pain in the butt to change out the seal than it is to clean the rotor so take a rag wet it with a little paint thinner or acetone i've even used gas if its all i had and stick it down inside with your finger or if your afraid to stick your finger in use something that will not damage the pick up rotor and roll the engine over a few times to clean the oil film off the rotor. 99 times out of a 100 this will do it i've never found a mag lucas or bth was bad just clean and set the points and clean the pick up every now and then. I'd buy he $10 one whether it works or not. Some of the core parts are easily worth that much.

I just found out that guy at work has a '49 Triumph that was given to him 15 years ago... I't all there in pieces... I go look at it this weekend... Must do some research on how much I should offer him...
Any idea? Suggestions?
Wish me luck!
It was bought in Italy and shipped to the US many years ago...
I'm too excited to sleep!
I'll post some pic's...

No clue without seeing ALL the pieces.

What's there ofttimes isn't as important as what's NOT there!
