Powerbronze Tail Tidy Installation Walk Through.

I'd like to start off by saying this project was incredibly fun, I had to cut wires, resolder, reshrink-wrap, and use most of my electrical, mechanical, and drafting skills to achieve this project.

I would like to state that if you attempt to use my walk through as a guide to do your own install from Powerbronze, I am in no way responsible for your screw ups.

In the beginning was the parasail:

By this I mean the GIGANTIC wing that is the license plate holder. We need to remove it...

1.) Remove the three mounting bolts that mount the rear fender to the underside of the bike.

2.) Disassemble the two parts of the fender so that you can unhook the 6 connectors that go to the tail light, license plate light and turn signals. Also disassemble the turn signals from the rest of the fender as you will need to dissect them for the stock connectors.

3.) Once the fender is fully detached and you're left with 6 connectors hanging off the back of the bike feel free to smash, crush, or stomp on the piece of junk you now have detached from the bike.

This is what you'll be left with hanging:

This is what you'll be left over with from disassembling the fender:

4.) Cut off the stock connectors for the brake light and turn signals, cut them off FROM THE LIGHTS THEMSELVES not the wire bundle still connected to the bike! Be sure to leave at least 2" on the connector end to allow for wire stripping and reattachment to the new parts.

5.) If you ordered the powerbronze turn signals like me, connect and heat shrink wrap the resistors to the turn signals ( this will seal them preventing moisture to short them out ).

6.) Cut off the ends of the male resistor wires as shown below, we will be soldering and heat shrink wrapping the stock connectors to these black and yellow wires, see below:

7.) Purchase a project box roughly 5" long X 2" tall x 2.5" wide from your local electronics store and drill two mounting holes and a third larger hole in the middle to mount the box to the underside of the tail tidy, this box will hold the ridiculously long wire mess we've made.

I also dismantled the tail tidy to carefully drill the two same size holes for the box mounting nuts and bolts and two small holes on the front face of the box for the turn signal wires to enter, see pics below:

8.) Once you've resoldered the stock connectors onto the new powerbronze wires you're ready to bundle everything up and pack it all into the project box nice and neat.

9.) Carefully pack all the wires into the box and make sure the 2 wires for each turn signal are in the drilled hole slots, so that the box cover does not pinch them.

10.) Turn bike on ( do not start the engine ) and test the functions of the turn signals, and the running light and brake light. When satisfied seal the box and enjoy!

Here are finished pictures of my installation:

Please note that my turn signals DO NOT hit the hard bags. Your installation depending on the country you live in may differ.

Nice write up:... wish I could come up with some nice looking to keep the stocker taillight. I have replace the stock taillight with the stock looking one with the turnsignals built in. Just need to get rid of that nasty hang down.

Nice

Well done Kory and good pics.:

Very nicely documented with excellent photos in the style of OND in the tech blog section.

Nice work, Kory- do you fancy a trip to snowy, cold New England to complete the same project on my new ST?

Just fitted an R&G eliminator. It looks good but is a real fiddle. And I have a couple of complaints:
The tail light connector was too big to fit through the hole in the eliminator so that had to be enlarged.

There is a cover that fits at the back of the eliminator to provide so protection for the witing - it has two holes to take the wires from the indicators but I could not see how you could fit these through the holes and then connect them to the loom on the bike so I turned them into slots to take the wiring intact. The cover is not nearly as neat an affair as described above but the OEM was hardly water-proof.

The stock indicators touch the panniers - just.

We'll see how it fares. But I'm not sure that I'd recommend it that strongly to others.
