Pirelli tyre range

I've been reading the tyre thread with interest, and note some misleading info on the Pirelli tyre range...

To the best of my knowledge (as a Pirelli stockist)

the Rosso (not Rossi) does NOT replace the Diablo. The Rosso and Diablo are BOTH available side by side in the Pirelli range (at least for now).

and the Angel ST does NOT replace the Strada. Once again BOTH of these tyres are available side by side in the 2010 range.

I can understand why it would look like the new names would replace the old faithfulls, and I can certainly see that happening in the future, but for now, they are all still available.

Also, the new "Rosso Corsa" should not be confused with either the Rosso, or the Corsa III - all 3 names are in fact seperate tread designs and compounds

for further info;
http://www.pirellityre.com/web/motor...e/default.page

and while we're on the subject, I got 10500km out of a set of Rosso's on my 06 Sprint ST, including a track day at Taupo. they performed excellently throughout, although the front did chop out a bit on the r/h side toward the end and made the turn in a bit steppy.

I have now put on a matched pair of Conti Sport Attacks, and have done 3000km since Christmas including 2 track days at the new Hampton Downs circuit, and I LOVE them. they hang on really well, and they are wearing superbly.

I might try the Angel ST's next. they are a lot harder than the 2 previous set's but I watched a novice track rider getting his knee down on a set of these on an 09 GSXR750 at Hampton Downs, so clearly grip at max lean is not an issue.

Ok

guys this is a long thread and I keep it short by pruning it periodically.

Unless you have a review or some really useful information on a tyre this stickie is not the place for your post.

Thank you
Dave

Michelin Power Pure

Hi All,

I just had a set of Michelin Power Pure tyres fitted to my Sprint and thought I'd share some initial thoughts after the first 200km on them.

I previously had the standard BT020s but with a punctured rear they needed replacement after ~5500km. In comparison, the Pure's make the whole bike feel a lot lighter and easier to tip into corners and flicking from one side to the other a LOT faster. At speed on straight freeways, they do feel a little more twitchy as they have a pointier profile but its not unstable by any means.

Grip-wise, even though I was trying to take it very easy at least for the first 50km, they felt great straight away. I encountered some pretty bumpy stuff this morning (where the road seemed to drop away mid-corner) but the tyres stayed planted and held the line with no real effort.

I'm really not sure what durability will be like - maybe 75% of the life of the Pilot Roads? I do around 8000km a year - one or two trips, a little commuting (one or two days a week at most), but usually just going out for a couple of hours on a Saturday or Sunday morning and I'm not overly aggressive.

I hope this helps, I'll post back after I've got some more k's on them but so far its a 100% improvement on the stock rubber.

Thanks DaveM,

I went through all that info before putting them on and it helped. My 2nd choice would have been the DQ's (also based on knowing a bunch of other guys with them on their B-Kings and being happy with them).

My understanding is that the Power Pure's are different to the older Powers in that they are supposed to be even lighter and the layout of the compounds is different (the harder compound strip in the centre is thinner now, allowing more of the soft stuff to form the contact patch when banked).

Thumbs up Conti SportAttacks

An update on my Conti SportAttacks that I metioned in my previous post;

these tyres have now done 6000km since being put on at christmas including 6 track days! and are wearing incredibly well.
they are getting to the end of their life now and I'm starting to look around for my next set of rubber.

I cant speak highly enough of the SportAttacks - they have handled weekend solo blasts, touring with luggage & pillion, DAILY commuting and 6 track days! they have worn evenly across the whole tread front and rear, and have pretty much worn out at the same time.

the front probably has 3000 road km left in it down the middle but the sides are worn into the wear bars from track riding. the rear is worn evenly right across but only has 1000k left. pretty good considering the abuse they have had.

they have never given me any concern on the track, no "moments" or lack of grip right up to both edges, they heat up quickly and offer confidence inspiring turn in and sharp steering.
4 days of 6x20 min sessions at Hampton Downs didn't tear them up badly at all. (ran at 30/30psi for track use) (33/36 or 34/38 for road use)

happy to recommend these tyres to anyone.

comparatively (taking into account much more track riding this year) they lasted similarly to the Pirelli Rosso I had last year which came off having covered 10500km, but the design of the Conti tread has proved to be far better at resisting the "stepping" effect that the front Rosso was bad for as it wore down. this has not happened AT ALL with the Conti.

I would definately buy another set. (and I just might!)

Metzeler M5 Sportec

Has anyone done decent km's on a set of the new Metz M5 Sportec's ?

these appear to be the sucessor to the M3, but have the new Interact carcass construction

what are your thoughts and experiences so far?

Thought i'd do a review on the Pirelli Angel STs that i fitted a month ago.

I'll try and make this as structured as poss and plan on doing a mid term (3000miles) update and a squared off (I need to change this tyre) update. The only other set i have used on the Sprint 955 are Bridgestone BT021; which i used from new till they were borderline illiegal.

Initial impressions - after 1000 miles
The initial ride out to scrub the tyres up was interesting, they are very pointy when compared to the bridgestones; and the first ride out was not particularly pleasant as the bike like it was falling away from me. This feel eased after a few miles.

Dry Grip I would say that these tyres offer a decent level of grip in the dry, but not as amazing as i had hoped (or read). Possibly it's just me but i feel the bike 'wiggle' about a bit more than on the Bridgestones, and I'm not 100% sure whether it's just they provide more feedback to the rider or that they do move a bit more. Either way i don't feel unsafe riding and they have never slipped but they shimmy a little. I have worn the tyre at the edges approx 1cm from the edge on the rear and about 3cm on the front.

Wet grip Can't really comment at this stage as we have had uncharacteristically good whether in UK recently! The brief ride i had on semi-wet were no problem.

Direction change / turn in
Due to the pointy profile of the tyres they do turn in nice and quickly, something i prefer the Pirellis for over the Bridgestone. Once turn in they feel stable.

Braking Not a lot i can say here, they haven't slipped on the brakes and feel nice and reassuring.

Wear Rate At this stage i can't comment too much, the 'angel' patten in the tyre is supposed to wear off at about 600miles, mine wore off down the middle after about 400. I put this largely down to the fact that 100 miles of that was 80mph motorway
and about another 150 was 2 up riding which is bound to wear the tyre quicker.

Overall i would recommend them, i'm happy with my the choice made. They look good on the bike (obviously a key criteria!), they grip well and i think they will last well. That and are miles better that the bridgestones they replaced. For reference i paid £210 fitted to loose wheels for the pair
