Throttle cable

Broke a couple days ago on my 98 TBS. The local dealers didnt have one so I ordered one from Bikebandit for thirty odd dollars.

It was fiddly jerry rigging it to get me home from the desert, any tips to make the job less than a five pinter when the new one arrives?

Easiest way is to take the carbs off.
You can do it witht he carbs on, but it is a fiddley job, and you will need a long screw driver to hold the throttle open and you will need to make a hook (an old coat hanger is what I used) to get the cable on at the carb.
Best bet is to prevent the cable from snapping, with regular and lots of cable lube.

I've just changed mine on my 98 TB.

1/ took off seat and tank
2/ took of side panels
3/ took off air box
4/ loosened air filter box from carbs pulled back
5/ took off L/H carb plastic cover (2 screws, be careful of rubber o-rings underneath the screws.
6/ undid throttle cable at handlebar end.


Things to watch, be careful not to damage the membrane of the open carb.

There is a small locking plate securing the carb end of the throttle cable to stop the locking nut from turning, needs pulled and later put back.

Make sure you leave some slack at the carb end so that the final adjustment is made at the handlebar end.

It's a fiddly job but I managed ok, you'll need good light in your garage and a small torch.

I got an air-lock in my carbs and had to blow down the fuel pipe with a bike-pump after I had finished installation. You may or may not have to do that, if it doesn't start that's what it is.

Make sure the carb slides fully retract when you make the final throttle adjustments. i.e. open and shut correctly.

Adjust idling as necessary, with the idle screw.

I didn't feel like taking the carbs off and making the job bigger than it really is, if you have trouble then take the carbs off.

Finally have some patience with it, if you can find an intelligent small mouse with tiny fingers, get it to do the job at the carb end.

I am a little confused as to why you would feel the need to partially disassemble one of the carbs?

I have changed out a throttle cable without resorting to pulling the air box or carbs, but as I have stated, it is not very fun or nice.

Well it gave me more finger and spanner room and was less of a hassle, and taking the cap off the carb wasn't really a big deal. Easy off and easy back on. Worked for me !

It is certainly alot less fiddly if you remove the carbs. You don't need to take them all of the way out, just slide them to the right a bit so you can get to the cable end. Definitely take it loose from the throttle end first. i've done it both ways it is not very fun with the carbs in place, and it's easy to damage the cable that way. A little stress on the cable from using a screwdriver to push it into place will cause it to fail prematurely. Don't ask me how I know that! O and get a cable luber and use it often.

I,ve done a throttle cable on a Legend and a TBS,both times leaving the carbs undisturbed.The Legend was done in half an hour.The TBS took about a hour and a half.Save yourself all the frustration and get those carbs off.If I do that job again,I will do it with the carbs off.

For all the great advice guys, I'm still waiting for the bloody cable. Bike Bandit said it is a supplier issue, I ws amazed the two local dealers don't stock it, order only. Seems crazy for a wearable part to be order only. Still, after all the do's and don't here it seems there are two camps, the "Carb's Off" and the "Carb's On" crowd.

Being of a dextrous nature I'll start with the carb's on approach, for 30 mins and see how it goes, if I'm ready beat my wench with a wrench I'll admit defeat and go the carb's off route.

I really take my hat off to those who have managed to replace a throttle cable on a CVK equipped triple without removing the carb. bank!


In the end, removal of the carbs. Quite simple then.
