I have a 1996 Speed triple. I have been cranking over the engine a lot recently because of some other trouble (see DynoJet posting) and the starter is now sick. The motor itself sounds OK but it sounds like it is no longer engaging completely.
I took it to the dealer and he said to replace the starter "clutch" mechanism (that was the diagnosis) it would take 11 man hours at $75 per hour.
Please tell me that there is another option or that he is mistaken. Is this right- a thousand bucks for a new starter clutch? If this is true then this bike is FOR SALE

Well, it sounds like they have diagnosed sprag clutch failure. do a seach here and you will find what is involved - removal and teardown of the engine. 11 hours seems reasonable to me, though I haven't actually doen this procedure (and hope I never have to). The part also runs to several hundred dollars.
Take a look in the photo albums, Sware IIRC has documented changing a sprag.
Your other option is to find a good used engine from a sprint or daytona of a similar age - it should drop right in and may end up costing less dependant on shipping costs.

Replacing the Sprag Clutch is not that hard but it is time consuming. A lot of parts have to come off and the cases have to be split.
The dealers kind of scared off from doing the job myself at first. However coughing up the 900 to 1300 my two local dealers wanted just wasn't going to happen. I let the bike sit around for several months before deciding to tackle the job. After talking to the more trusted of the two dealers and reading posts by others here that have done the job, I knew I needed a way to support the the bike while doing the work so I built a platform to strap the bike to.

I took lots of pictures of the job in progress. Still haven't got around to captions and such but you can see those here.

Mo....
It's implied in your post since you only quote the labour; but I just want to say that you should be able to get the part itself free - at least if your dealer is a Triumph dealer
So if you can wrench, then you only need pay for some gaskets and oil/coolant. That's what both Stan and I did. It's really not that bad.

I forgot to mention that If it had not been for Chris telling me Triumph gave him the part, my bike would probably still be sitting there. The part is about $300.00. My dealer had already told me the part was not covered by any service bulletin or anything. After Chris told me about his being covered I went back and asked about it. (We both use the same dealer). He had to submit a request twice because of the age and mileage of my bike. Sure enough though Triumph took care of me.

IIRC this has something to do with Triumph admitting a design weakness in the early models and covering replacement with stronger (redesigned parts) for free. It may or may not) apply to your 1996 Speed Triple moRecycle, as even the later redesigned units can fail, but it is definately worth asking.
