Your best bet, I think, is to go to a triumph shop and ask if they know anyone that works on (real) older Trumpets. Bars are a good place to ask, if they are dives! Good luck! I had a friend with a '61 650 Pre unit chopper, and that bike was quick!

Post this in the "Classics and Cruisers" forum, you will probably get more replies in there.

You can also try the triumph-twins group on yahoo, they're dedicated to Meriden Triumphs like yours.

Good luck

.can't guarantee if these sites will be direct sources of answers, but they may lead you the info you need.....

metrotriumphriders.com - SE MI - may be a good source on "where to go" for parts, etc

triumphdetroit.com - Roseville, MI dealer in new Triumphs, may be able to point you in the right direction

britishonly.com - Garden City, MI - dealer in old parts

bellacorse.com - Lathrup Village, MI - dealer in parts - lotsa new, not sure about the old

garysbikeshop.com - Durand, MI - found them on the web

slickssalvage.com - Mason, MI - lotsa old bike parts - like any salvage yard, maybe they'll have something, maybe not

.......there was also a shop specilizing in old Triumph parts up towards Port Huron, but I can't remember the name.

You might also want to check the Triumph Forum on Delphi.

Dave Quinn Motorcycles has a good video set for both unit and pre-unit engines for disassembly and re-assembly. A parts manual and the vids can get the motor done. If it's sat for any time, I would strongly suggest splitting the cases to at least clean out the sludge trap, so the con-rods will get their proper alotment of oil. The guy close to me who works on them told me that many who bring back an older Triumph fail to do this with grim results, as the bike can be made to run without doing the work, but after a short period of time the whole motor blows badly because someone tried to save a buck by not tearinf down the motor to make sure all was well. Simply put, if it's been sitting, all is probably not well in there. Worh the work though to have a fine older bike.

I have worked on the old ( pre unit) and I own the new ones,
get a book on any thing but Hinkley, and if you have worked on bikes you should be able to figure it out.
The generator on those models always gave me grief,
( George Lucas Prince of Darkness, and why Brits drank warm beer ) but the magneto was almost bullet proof.
650 cc is still 650cc and you can still get just about anything you want for those bikes. Mick McGuire has a list of parts suppliers at the head of this forum, British Only used to have an exploded view of a model don't remember which one.
If you have specific questions about any thing give a holler.( send PM)
Bill
