My ignition switch is going south, going to have to replace it sooner or later.

What kind of fasteners are holding the switch to the upper yoke?

From underneath it looks like two small bolts. A 4mm, 1/4" drive deepwell socket sort of fit but didn't do the job. What looks like the tiny bolt head is in a deep recess and it doesn't look like a normal bolt head.

Can anybody help me out here?

They are some kind of security bolt, designed to be tightened but never loosened again. You will have to drill them and use a screw extractor.

When you fit the new lock you can use ordinary Allen bolts.
