My 99 daytona is my first triumph. I got a nice triumph carbon low pipe from ebay and now need a remap. My local dealer says they will need the bike for about two hours. Mainly because they need the bike to be cool when they download the new tune...and because they are going to reset the idle CO.

OK, Why a cool bike?? This would be the first "programmable" EFI I have worked with that seems to care if the vehicle is warm or cold. Also, we dont need to emission test bikes around here...

Whats up, is this cat just feeding me a line? Or is there really something to it?

And yes I am already debating the $60 for a tune, $310 for a tuneboy issue.

Help please.

I use TuneBoy to mess with my bike all the time, and I make sure it is warm when I experiment with maps. I don't understand why it needs to be cool. It seems that they would have to warm it back up if they are going to set the CO correctly when the ECU is fueling without the cold start routine running.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

Will is correct, of course, that conventional map tweaking for performance enhancement does not require a cold start. For some types of tuning, though, you do want to start from cold.

You're replacing hardware, so with the new map the ECM is also going to need a chance to recalibrate its response to sensor input. This requires cycling all the way from the cold state to normal operating temperature. (The CO check is not just for emissions. With EFI it's also a way of ensuring conditions are optimal for reliable idle.)

They're not going to be charging you rent for the two hours it's cooling down --at least, I'd hope not!-- so it's not like they're trying to put anything over on you. Don't sweat it.

Checked with Team triumph of Wisconsin, out of Janesville, Wi. They said 15 minutes for a new tune... hmmmm still not quite sure about the local dealer. Thanks for the input

On an open loop system, my 99 955 that has no feedback to the best of my knowledge, (O2 sensor) How does the ECM "recalibrate its response to sensor input"?

I would think that the sensors read and report to the ECM in the exact same fashion as they always have. Unless you change sensors, or alter the sensor output, And the ECM just applies the sensor output to the new map value.

Even if you did change the sensor output wouldn't the ECM just read the "altered" signal and try to repond to the new value instead of trying to recalibrate?

I have read that it is possible to reset the TPS zero but I would figure that once it is set the "recalibration" is done, and the ECM once again resumes normal function with the new zero value.

Or am I missing something significant?
