Whilst fitting a new air-filter assembly to my Trophy 1200 (which means removing the carbs' ) I noticed that all of the engine inlets, where the carbs' fit onto the engine, have a bubbly, paint-like coating inside them. It appears to be coming off and I wondered if I should be concerned.
Somebody suggested it might be overspray from when the engine was painted at the assembly stage.
Any clues anyone ?

Not quite sure what it could be, but anything other than fuel/air passing through the carbs is not good news. How long has the bike been stored? It could be gummed up fuel... I think while you have it apart, I would see about cleaning it out. I would think that the intake ports would have been masked off during any painting steps to avoid anything getting in there.

Definately something I would look to correct IMHO.

Are these inlets metal or black plastic. I recall having plastic inlets on my Steamer Tiger that has bubbles on the surface finish that appeared to be part of the moulding process. These inlets were not painted. The bubbles appeared to be stable and not actually flaking off, so they did not worry me.

Well.
I phoned the dealer and their advice was to clean it off if it bothered me. Trouble is, I had already put the bike back together. I'm guessing that any paint ( or whatever it is ) that flakes off, will be incinerated anyway, so why worry ? All I can say is, after a plug, air-filter and oil/filter change, it goes like a good un' :-D . Blimey, trophys can't half shift, can't they ?
If the weather allows, I'll probably be putting 600 mile plus on it next week-end. That should be a good run !
Oh yes, the inlets are metal. Thanks for your input, people.
