i bought my TT 600 in august with 954 miles on it, and the oil had just been changed. it now has around 1800 miles, and i was wondering if it is due for an oil change. i'm pretty new to motorcycle maintenance, but i'm handy with a wrench. if someone could help me out, that would be great!

Dunno about the 600 but both of mine call for 6K changes.

Opinions about oil and oil change intervals are as varied as the guys that ride bikes or drive cars. But one thing for sure is that nothing wore out from been lubricated to well.
Many of the newer bike have a recommended oil change interval of 5-6K but it will depend on your riding style and the bike.
I would certainly be willing to let the oil in a Gold wing for a much longer time than any 600cc bike out there.
I general run my bikes 3K or so between changes and I change the oil at the end of the season. But if I am going on a trip and it is going to be a long one I change the oil before I go so I do not have to worry about it on the trip. I generaly can tell when the oil is loosing the battle because I feel the shifting start to stiffen and I can hear more valve noise. Then I know it is time to change it.
That is what works for me and makes me feel that I am taking care of the bike.
I run Mobile one 10/40 in my Triumph and Vaviline in my Suzuki. I tried synthetic in the Suzuki but it did not like it. It became an oil eater, so I switched back to conventional oil and it lost it's appetite.
Hope you find this useful.

Very true Sprinting.
Since you're in this neck of the woods, I'm assuming you store one/both of your bikes for at least part of the winter - ?
If so, do you change your oil in the fall, in the spring, or both? I've heard opinions every way. I like to get the old oil out in the fall, but am still mixed on throwing away oil that sat over the storage period. What's your take on it?

Hi Shawboy
I do put the bikes to bed for the winter. I always change the oil and filter in fall when I put the bikes away. I hate to leave all of that nastiness in the engine over the winter.
I have read several places that the oil should go once it has been open for six months. Though I am sure that there is something to that I still run the winter oil for a while in the spring. I usually go some what short on the first oil change interval keeping the oil life in mind.
Even in a bad season we normally do not have to keep out bikes put away for more then five months any way so it is not a big deal. I think it would be more of a problem if you had miles on that oil and then let it sit.
For the gas I mix in Seafoam and fill it up and let it run before pulling the plug for the year. I started using Seafoam two years ago in place of Stable and It seems to work fine.
But as much as I like fuel injection I prefer carbs when it comes to winterizing. I always stabilized the gas and then drained the carbs in fall and tuned the gas off. In spring turn the gas on crank the bike over a bit it get oil pressure and start the bike. FI just is never that easy.
Well hopefully that northern jet stream will move out of here one of these days so we will warm up and be able to get our scooters out again.
Think warm

Thanks for your .02 Sprinting. I usually run the oil awhile in the spring as well. Maybe 1K or so. Not having a FI bike previously, last winter I followed the entire schedule laid out in the manual, which included draining the tank. (Weird.) I did not like the noise coming from the fuel pump in the spring as it waited to get fuel down the line - so this time around I just went the Stabil route which always worked with the carbed bikes OK. We'll see soon enough I guess.
