sprockets and chain

Hey all,

I want to change the sprockets (front and rear) and the chain on my '00 Speed Triple. Any brand recommendations or vendors would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I went to J/M gears for mine (18-43).
DID 530 OXO chain (gold).

For the chain, Id recommend the DID ZVM2. Best price I found was sprocketcenter.com ... You might find some good sprockets from them as well. NOTE: The OEM countershaft sprockets have a rubber buffer that seems to keep the drivetrain just a hair quieter than a bare sprocket. (at least its that way on the S4) I'd still recommend going with steel for longevity purposes, especially on that high torque bike. I have a JT rear steel sprocket.

Much appreciated. I plan spending a good deal of money and time this winter working on the things I generally leave for a dealership. So cables, sprockets, chain, grips, and levers will be replaced.

I second the DID 530 chain. I put their x-ring chain on my T-bird and couldn't be happier.

I just replaced the chains/sprockets on my Trophy 1200. This is the second set, with the OEM units warn out in <20k miles. (If I remember correct, they were replaced at <18k). I replaced them with AFAM sprockets & DID's top chain available back in '98.

I replaced them with a new set of AFAM sprockets and DID's best chain again, at 48k. I couldn't see any measurable wear in either the sprockets I removed or the chain, but did the change-out anyway for peace of mind. I don't want a chain failure somewhere in the middle of nowhere while on a trip, or at night on the interstate.

I got the sprockets and chain from Drive Sprockets, Inc, in San Diego (I think). I called them (800-290-9040) and had the sprockets in my hands in B'ham, AL, in 3 days. Not bad service at all! Let's see if I get 30K+ miles from this set!

As always, YMMV

How much work?

Hey All,
My 02 sprint is in need of new sprockets and chain. I have moderate mechanical abilities and am wondering about doing this myself as opposed to taking it to the dealer, How much work is it?

I'm sure I can get the sprockets changed but don't know about the chain, are there any special tools needed to break the chain?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I bought my 45 T rear sprocket from Jack Lilley as I couldnt find a 45 anywhere in the states. I used an oem front sprocket with the rubber noise reducer, and went with a DID XM 530 chain. I hate not having the right tools, so bought the DID chain tool that works with the ZJ connecting link. It was 125 bucks, but I will save every time i replace the chain. You want to be sure you install the link correctly, or bad things can happen. Here's a link
