bonneville mechanical question

72 bonneville runs for about 20 miles , the motor gets hot and shuts down (like its running out of gas) not able to kick start. It sits overnight and then starts right up in the morning, any help would be appreciated thanks

Are you still running stock ignition or Electronic sounds like you might have a electrical short in the ignition when it gets hot the short opens when it cools down it closes.

one word for you......coils......your symptoms perfectly describe a bad coil (or two).....as in, fires up, dies when hot, fires up when cold.

Argi coils are cheap if you. I dont think $2000 is a bad deal if the title is clear and the bike is sound. I just bought a 68 engine in pieces for $ 500 with a clean title and brand new magneto.

Was thinking about this after my last post. Those coils are cheap, just slap any generic coil on there, long as the dimensions are correct. Triumph replacements would likely be expensive. Does that have 2 six volt coils?? For some reason I'm thinking my Norton has 2 six volt coils, that could be a problem finding, maybe a tractor place. We used to buy replacement coils @ Kmart for ~$10, any had more output than stockers. If they are 12V, you are in luck, just go to PEPboys or wherever and get 2 coils.
As far as buying the machine, without seeing it, if it's all there and mostly stock, doesn't seem to bad a price. You could go to www.jwoodandcompany.com to get a better idea of what this was selling for this past March. They are the guys with a big MC aution here in Fl @ Daytona @ the end of bike week each year. Good place to get a real value of bikes. Check their auction results for 2007 and you'll likely find one same as or close to what you are looking at.

Why didn't that www thing come in highlighted? oh well, cut and paste to your browser.
