Battery tenders/maintainers

I was reading a post on the forum a few days ago, somebody posted that motorcyle batteries are useless unless hooked to a tender. In 45 years of riding multiple bike brands, but mostly triumph, I have never had the need for a charger or tender.

I have never been stranded because of battery failure, however I do replace my batteries every 5 years or so.

Just curious as to why so many people use them.

Because if you have a modern bike which you use infrequently, alarms in particular kill batteries pretty quickly. And if you have something like a big Triumph or Aprilia, to name a couple, not only will it not start, you can do damage to the sprag clutch in particular when trying. :smile2:

I've had the but unless I wasn't going to ride the bike in several months, which hasn't happened in the last 5 years, I wouldn't put it on a charger. Recently, I installed some accessory power plugs and if I leave them installed, it'll draw power until the battery dies. I could plug that into the tender or I could just unplug the accessory line.

I use tenders on all 3 of my bikes. Sometimes it is a long time before I get back to riding one or the other bike. 2 of my bikes are T-3's. They are known for being hard to start. I think the last time I changed a bettery it was about 8yrs. old. This year I did have to replace the oldest tender I have. It was 13 years old. ...J.D.
