Hard to start after the mod's

I posted this in the Bonnie forum but thought I'd try here as well. Pardon my etiquette if this is incorrect. I have a 2007 T100. At about 2K miles, I did the following mod's (as noted in my sig as well). I removed the AI, installed the NARK and K&N's, removed the EVLS, added the D&D's, 42 pilots, 140 mains and at this point I'm at 3 1/2 turns out. It runs really well. No flat spots, real torquey and sounds great! The only trouble is the first start of the day. I live in Simi VAlley , CA so it's not been really cold outside. The trouble began as soon as the mod's were done. I did the usual: pull out the choke, open the petcock etc...give the button a push and she runs for sec and dies. This will happen three or four times until she finally beings to warm up. BTW as she's warming up it's as if I'm goosing the throttle. The rev's will fluctuate 3-4k RPM's. Eventually she gets up to about 2k on the rev counter and after that it's all good. I have tried pulling the choke out less than full and I THINK it seems to help. My buddy MES suggested some plug chopping to see if she's running fat or lean. I would be so grateful for any other advice as well. Is it DYNO time?

Cheers,

SK

3.5 turns out on the mix screws? In CA, this time of year, I'm surprised you need any choke at all at 3.5 turns out.

Hmmm...good point

Kit,
Perhaps It's too rich? I'd heard in the beginning that I should turn the screw back in until I get popping on deceleration, and the back off a quarter turn out from there. Thoughts? Any idea as to why it's tough to start?

Cheers,

SK

I'm no expert! I will admit to knowing a thing or 2 about the mid-'90s carbureted triples, but I have no experience with the twins. It does seem to me like 3.5 turns out could make it too rich, but that's mostly because the triples like their screws at 2.5, maybe 3 turns out max. Have you tried starting w/o choke?

A plug chop will give you a ballpark idea of rich or lean in general, but I don't see how it would help w/ idle mix settings.

Cheers,
-Kit

Good point

I have tried without the choke...could the jets be the cause or does this stink of mixture screw only? What about the "goosing" effect that happens during warm up. Good point about the plug chopping. I appreciate it. I'll get her straight I'm sure. BTW it's really just a work around since she runs beautifully once she's warmed up. Perhaps it misses the 235 feet of vacuum hose I removed. ;-)

Cheers,

SK

I suppose I have managed to pick up a piece or two of general knowledge between the KZs & the Trident. Here's the gross oversimplification of carbs that made me understand a few things:

Main jets control fuel flow at large throttle openings. Bigger mains = more fuel @ WOT.

Slow jets control fuel flow at small throttle openings. Bigger slow jets = more fuel off idle.

Mixture screws control fueling at idle. More turns out = more fuel @ idle.

Choke does what it says: it cuts off airflow. That's good for giving you a rich mixture for starting from cold.

So.... Problems starting but runs fine sounds like mix screws to me. Does she start w/o choke? You said you tried, but you didn't say what happened.

The "goosing" thing kind of sounds like an air leak to me, but if it only hapens while the choke is on I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe someone else will chime in w/ more definitive knowledge.

Cheers,
-Kit

Two things

I gurentee you are rich on the idle, go in to about 2.5 -3.0 turns to start, Balance the carbs if you have not done it already. Then let us know

One more thing

Put new plugs in, this is needed when you make the radical carb changes, and it really helps getting set up well. not sure why but it seems to, also remember these are air cooled (primarily) and are pretty hard on plugs.

Getting there

Hello Gents,

I turned the pilot screw back in, so now it's 2 turns out. It seems that if I "half choke" on the first start of the day, all goes well. The "goosing" even seems a bit better. I think my vacuum caps may be a bit long. I'm thinking that the top of the vacuum port should make contact with the cap itself. I did pull the plugs far a look see. They look d-a-m-n near new. A very..VERY slight tanning on part of the white ceramic just above the "gappy thingy." I think I'm going to keep going in on the pilot until I get the dreaded "popping on de-cel." I also spoke to one of the guys at Peak Performance out here in Simi...they have a dyno and know these carbs well. $90.00 per hour....OUCH!
