Question Need help finding relay

Is there an easy way using a multimeter to figure out if an accessory circuit has a relay in it? I just bought a new machine with a Powerlet outlet, and was wondering if I can hook my battery charger to it.

Is the powerlet outlet hot with the bike switched off?

Yes, I charge mine with a Battery Tender through that outlet. BT makes a connector or you can buy them at the BMW Moto shop.

Yes, it should be 'HOT' when all turned off.
See this post for details on connector cables that will fit that socket (not that it is NOT a std. cigarette lighter fitting)

I was trying to get him to figure out the answer to his question himself. Guess he hasn't checked in since asking it, or...........?

I'm back

The socket appears not to be hot with the ignition on or off. Looks like I'll have to pull the front fairing panels to see what's going on.

If you haven't already done so, you might want to check the fuse. If it is fried, replace it and see if you have 12vdc at the connector. If it pops again, you will have to find the short.

If the fuse is ok, the next thing to look at would be the connectors at the back of the outlet, and the integrity of the outlet. If all of that is ok, trace the ground wire and check that it is securely bonded to it's ground point. If the ground is ok, you will need to move down the harness and check the connector.

If you haven't found the problem after all of that it will probably need to be checked by a shop.

Problem Solved!

Thanks, guys. Pulled the seat off and replaced the fuse. This outlet is on a relay, so looks like a new outlet for the charger. No problem, was looking to hang a jacket outlet under the seat.
