Transmission issues- Jumping out of gear on decleration

I thought I would ask here since the 1050 motor is used in more than just the Speed Triple.

I bought a 2012 Speed Triple with 9k miles for a steal. It has a shifting issue though. Sometimes I was downshifting the lever would seem to just hit the floor and did not engaged a lower gear. If you kept pushing it down nothing would happen. If you brought it up a gear and back down, it would engage. It seemed to happen all different gears (mostly 4 to 3 and 3 to 2) and happened about 10% of the time. It would randomly jump out of gear, but I will get more into that later. It also never banged or grinded while shifting and the engine is awesome. I drained the oil and it was not glittery. Maybe bad or the wrong oil? Nope, that didn't fix it. I put the correct oil in. Adjusted the clutch cable.

At first I found the detent was actually not seated and just hanging. While inspecting I found that the pivot plate was worn. I ordered a new spring and pivot plate and installed. Easy fix right... Well it shifts 95% better after fixing it.

I rode it about 100 miles and was shifting better. It was very rare for it to miss downshifting. I blamed it on it being a new bike to me and hearing that the speed has a stubborn/clunky transmission. It was jumping of gear though, just 4th gear every once and awhile. It didn't do it on acceleration or hard acceleration, just when I let off the throttle.

Well today it it got much worse the downshifting issue is back. Anytime I let off the throttle it will jump out of 4th gear and into a false neutral. I am ready to start tearing into her now. This is the first time doing transmission work but not too worried, I will follow the shop manual step by step.

So a couple questions.

I assume my 4th and whatever gear is meshed with it is bad or one or more dogs is worn or the the shift forks are bent. Before I split the cases, is there anything else I should look at?

I found a full transmission on ebay with 3k miles on it for $100, should I buy it and use the parts I need or if it looks good swap everything? Since one gear can cost $80 or more it seemed like a good price. It has basically every part of the transmission. One of the gears looks like it has pitting but it could be the camera. Should I just avoid the used transmission all together and buy new. If I replace just one gear, I will be ahead.

Is there any parts I have to replace when splitting the cases? Washers, bearings, ect... I assume there is not a how to for the 1050 in regards to splitting the cases or repairing the transmission?

I was told to try to replace the selector wheel from a mechanic much more skilled than myself. I bought the transmission from ebay as well. Can't beat $100 for a entire transmission and it is sooo cheap it was worth it in case more than one part is broken. Anyone else have an opinion on what else it could be?

All I hear is crickets...... Well, I guess I will be splitting the cases if the selector wheel doesn't work. I will post some pictures of the process, since there doesn't seem to be any.

I am going to check out the shift wheel first and see what it looks like. I don't think that is the issue though. The project will likely start this weekend.

I just received the used trans. It looks brand new, almost zero wear. I will take pictures of the process of splitting the cases and fixing the transmission. Never worked on a transmission before but just about everything else. It's going to be a long winter and I just installed insulation and a heater in the garage, working on the bike is almost as much fun as riding for me.

I started the project last night. Well I may have found the problem but it may just be caused by the something else, just to be sure I will split the cases anyway. I have to remove the oil pan anyway to get the the missing piece. It's winter time here and I have my DRZ to ride around.

So I got the engine out and split the cases. A few days after I posted last. Here are some pictures. So while waiting for the replacement gaskets, orings and screws, I have been cleaning the gasket material off the engine, cleaning the frame. I have been soaking any slightly rusty parts in metal rescue. Doing any thing I can over xmas break to kill the time. I hate waiting for parts but damn that bike is clean.

I recieved the delivery of parts from bike bandit yesterday. Here is the progress so far.

So it just seems like the detent wheel was the problem all along. I am glad I inspected the transmission to be sure. I have decided to put the transmission with only 3k miles in the bike since it looks very slightly better.

In the pictures is the ghetto wrench I made to remove the sprag clutch. I have a welder but wanted to see if I could make it without welding since I was low on argon. Saved $61 for the 15 minutes it took to make it using some 6mm bolts and nuts and a scrap piece of 1/8 sheet metal. I rounded off the nuts. It fit perfectly. Not the prettiest thing in the world.

I also found if you use a good fitting screwdriver or some other rod you don't have to buy the special tool to remove the oil pump sprocket. That tool is $106.

So as of tonight I have installed the new shift drum and the shifting mechanism. I am so glad I bought a inch lb torque wrench a few months ago as a lot of the bolts so far are 12 ft lb. I am leaving the heat on in the garage over night so the cases are nice and warm tomorrow when I get home from work. I'll install the transmission and seal the cases and let it sit 24 hours at 65 degrees. Then the engine gets put back in. I am limiting my garage time or my wife is going to kill me.

All done. Engine is back in and it runs and shifts perfectly. I went for a 30 minute ride, since it was 55 degrees in PA in January lol.

I have done a lot of work on motorcycles be this was the biggest project I have taken on. I am going to guess that it took 30 hours. If you going to take on this project, I would recommend you are organized and take pictures. The 2x8 table was the perfect size for all the parts, using the storage under the table for larger items. I took about 200 pictures. If I took off a part I took a picture. This saved me about 5 or 6 times when reassembling. It honestly wasn't that hard to do, just nerve racking at times. Read and re-read the shop manual. I found myself reading a section over and over to be sure. That first ride was such a good feeling.

The only issue I ran into is the battery cover goes around the battery and the rubber strap goes to it. Can't figure out how that went back on. I have 2 of these weird clips that came from the battery area. I also can't figure out how one of the drain hoses run. I will have to take a picture when i get home.
