2002 Triumph Sprint ST, rear wheel. Is it normal to have a little play in the rear wheel when rocking it back and forth with your hands located at the top and bottom of the wheel. There is no play if you grab the tire from the front and back and rock it back and forth but only when grabbing it at the top and bottom. I have checked the pinch bolt for the rear hub and it is tight. Also the torque on the wheel nut and axel nut are good. Normal, or not normal? That is the question. Thanks! :???:

Hi, what you have described here is normal play , being old school I replaced all the bearings in mine when I first noticed it.. Ended up exactly the same after having done the job. I did some research & found that this is built in & normal due earlier bearing failures that didn't have enough tollerance :hammer: The play you can feel comes from the RH side hub needle roller bearing & from memory I believe Triumph gave it a tollerance of .6mm  Hope this helps alleviate any concerns you have... Smile Rear wheel play on 02 ST

Sweenz, the play I had was worse than what I had posted. It was sever enough that I could feel and hear a clunking sound and it was a lot more than .6 mm. I removed the rear wheel and hub assemblies and rocked the swing arm back and forth with the same results. The swing arm would move side to side 1/4 inch as measured from the end. I could see the movement on the left side of the swing arm as I worked the thing back and forth. I replaced and lubricated the bearings and spacers, re-torqued the swing arm bolt and the play is now gone. However, there is still a very slight amount of movement, which I now believe is the .6 mm you are referring to, and I was wondering about it. Thanks for the info!
