It's definitely time to clean out the carbs on my '96 Sprint. I've done many, but this is the first time I've done these. When disassembling them, a jet fell out of each bowl. It's not threaded, just a little hollow bullet-shaped brass part about 1/4 inch long with a tiny hole through the middle. It doesn't appear in any of the pictures I've found in the factory service manual or on any website. I have no idea where it goes. Also, these carbs do not have the threaded slow-speed jet depicted in every drawing I've found. I've been through all the relevant forums here, and still haven't found anything about these jets. The link to the excellent photos of rebuilding these carbs might be helpful, even though they don't show this jet either, but my French is not good enough.
Help!

Did you check the T3 Forum? I know somebody there recently(ish) had a very similar question, & there is much carb discussion going on at any given time.
Cheers,

Try here, and to theright there are links to Carbs and will show you the fiche for it.
I am not familiar with Sprint carbs, but I am with my old FZR as I have pulled and cleaned and rebuilt a few time and I believe they were the mikuni as well. The piece you describe sounds like the piece that go above the floats. When the area is full of fuel the floats go up and pushes that piece up and blocks it so fuel doesn't still flow. I forget what teh term is called for that piece though.

Thanks for your responses. I've been through every post on this site with the word "carburetor." And I've seen the fiche too. If all else fails, I'll take the carbs in a box to the dealer (how embarrassing). The owner has the exact same bike, and maybe he's seen these little jets and knows where they go. But not yet, not yet.............

Is this thread any help? It doesn't contain the word "carburetor." :-D (Searching for "carb" is often more effective...)
If that doesn't help, posting pics might...

-Kit

Ah! That thread helped. It describes exactly the parts I'm talking about: the tiny brass piece at the bottom left of his photo, arranged below the needle jet in the pic with the keys. He thinks it goes in the emulsion tube before screwing in the main jet. It does indeed fit there, and the main jet screws in no problem after inserting it there. Could it be a seat for the needle? If so, is it supposed to be firmly pressed onto the needle? It will fit up into the emulsion tube when inserted through the bottom of the tube, and if it doesn't travel with the needle, it will severely restrict fuel-flow up into the emulsion tube (its hole is much smaller than the hole in the main jet). It doen't seem likely, but if that's where it belongs, the remaining mystery is, how in the h*ll did it fall out? I found one in the bowl when I disassembled the carbs, and the others fell out when I removed the slides before I saw where they came from.

Success! Took the carbs to the dealer and the mechanic showed me where the mystery jets go. The plastic frame that holds the floats includes a fuel intake passage for the, well I'm not sure what it's for, maybe the cold-start enrichment circuit. Anyway, these tiny brass slugs just snap into those plastic passages. There's not much holding them in place, and I can see how they could fall out with the carbs on their side on the workbench. That's probably what happened. These carbs are low-emissions specials, possibly for California, because there are no idle-mixture adjustment screws.
Sorry I can't post pictures, don't own a digital camera.
Thanks for all your help.

Even the Cali carbs have idle mix screws, they just have them screwed too far in! They are probably just capped off. Removing the caps & adjusting the screws to ~2.5 turns out from lightly seated would probably make he bike happier, especially on cold starts. I can't recommend doing that, though, as it would violate EPA regs...
Cheers,
-Kit

No mixture screws at all on these carbs. The dealer mechanic has seen them before but is at a loss to explain what market they're intended for. The bike was originally sold in this area (suburban Philadelphia, PA). At that time we had no special emissions laws, just emissions inspections for cars and light-duty trucks.

Manayunk, by any chance? (I happen to know their service department is top-notch.)
Shame you don't have a camera, I'd love to see those carbs!
Cheers,
-Kit
