I need to find out if the thermastat helps with keeping the engine from over heating. I know it lets the bike warm up faster, but does it do anything with getting to hot?

I'm not sure I understand that. I talked to a radiator repair guy and he said that it does close down or limit the flow when it gets hot to let the water spend more time in the fins and transfer the heat. So if that is true then the thermo has two jobs that I can see. I just need to know if the second job is for real. I guess if nobody here knows I'll find out as soon as I ride in the heat.

Doesn't sound logical to me. The longer your coolant remains static, the hotter it would get.
If your doing your riding in the Bay Area (California I'm assuming), I would think that the last think you'd want to do is restrict coolant flow.
Hence, no thermostat.

DMc, I don't know if you are a smart ass or truly confused. I'll just consider that you might have actually talked to a "radiator repair guy" and didn't understand what he said.
A thermostat is in place between the engine and radiator to ensure the coolant is maintained at a preset temp. When the temp falls below that, the thermostat closes, blocking the coolant flow to the radiator, forcing the fluid through the bypass directly back to the engine. The coolant continues to circulate like this until it reaches the preset temp, then the thermostat opens and allows coolant back through the radiator. Very elemental.
It is not designed to close down when it gets too hot. It is designed to open when it gets hot. If it sticks closed, it gets very hot.
Now I have a question, why the 'tongue sticking' when somebody is trying to answer your question?

Gota love the internet. I meant no ill will. I did talk to the repair guy and repeated what he said. I was confused which is why I posted. Your explanation was my understanding also. I just needed reasurence from someone who knows more than me about such things. Thanks for taking the time to post.

So far so good. I have been riding it and other than lower gas mileage it seems to be working fine. The gas mileage problem is more from missing the bike than anything else though

My dog sticks his tongue out when he gets hot, maybe he's feeling empathy for his bike's situation. :jest:
