Hey all,

I took my TBS out for a run yesterday and after about 20 Miles it started to loose power as if running out of gas (which it wasn't). No matter how much throttle I gave it it just kept bogging down and slowing. It sounded different as well, more or less like it was "puttering" or "stuttering". When I came to a stop light it outright died. After a few moments of checking things out, I cranked her over and she started again without issue and sounded and felt normal. After about another 5 Miles it repeated the performance. I checked the air filter when I got home and it seems OK, any suggestions on what might be causing this and/or how to rectify it? It's 27 C here today.... I'm loosing valuable ride time as I dare not venture too far for fear of having to make arrangements to get her home if she fails completely!

:???:

Thanks to those who replied to my fork seal post as well... the info helped greatly!

Gas or vacuum lines kinked? Did you have the tank off recently? Fuel cap vent clogged? Bad petcock?

Bogging down, puttering, etc., along with starting back up right away, sounds like fuel to me...

(A bad pickup coil has some of the same symptoms, but would kill it right away & wouldn't restart 'til it cooled down.)

I'd still bet on the pickup coil. Mine sputtered etc quite a bit the first day i noticed a problem. It deteriorated quickly after that. When it started dying out on me, it would start back up within 5 minutes or so but wouldn't run long. The longer it cooled after dying, the longer it would run before dying again.

OK,

Now if it is the pick up coil, would the bike start and run without issue? I did a bit of work on the bike tonight which also involved removing and replacing the air filter. she seemed to run fine but I didn't put her under any load, just idle with the occasional rev after having cleaned the carbs.

Other than tonight to replace the air filter, I've never had the tank off but the fuel cap air vent is a possibility as I'd recently replaced the tank cap.

I'm almost afraid to inquire about the cost of a replacement pick up coil!

The pickup coil is under $70, so it's not too scary. When the fail, it's usually heat-related: it'll run when cold, but the coil stops working when it heats up. Let it cool down, it'll run again. Lather, rinse, repeat...

I'm going on second-hand knowledge here. Most of the people in the T3 forum have described it as being like hitting the kill switch, but SWare has had it happen to him so listen to what he says.

It still sounds like fuel to me, but now it also sounds like the pickup coil has more than one failure mode...

A filler cap test you can try that I've seen recommended elsewhere: ride it for a little while with the cap open. Obviously, that poses a risk or 7, but it should tell you whether the cap vent is the problem. Doing a static version of the same test won't really work, as the bike won't be flowing much fuel.

By the same token, a static test should be able to tell you if it's the pickup: just let it run long enough for the fan to come on, & that should be enough heat to make a faulty pickup fail.

HTH,
-Kit

Cheers Fellas,

I'll do a bit of testing close to home tonight and post my findings.

Thanks again!
