Trying to install new 412 series shocks on my 06 Bonnie.

bike on center stand

pulled left shock first. Go to install new shock and it's about 1/4 - 3/8 in to long. So much for the 15 min job.

Do I need to slacked the chain? Will this allow enough play to install new shock?

Hate to do it but would removing both shocks at once than reinstalling be better? would need to support tire to prevent dropping down, correct. Than use a wedge to under tire to align mtd holes on shock?

Help......shouldn't have started this tonight. Either way going to wait till I get back in town on sunday to finish.

Yes. No big deal. Drop em both. Not uncommon to have longer shocks, though you may wish to confirm you have the correct shocks (unless longer is your goal). I wished I had gotten longer ones for an XS11 I had. Would have meant longer travel and less trail (generally quicker steering with a better ride).

I put Progressives on my old KZ440. I had to pull both of the originals to do it. IIRC, I also needed a friend & a rubber mallet. (Mind you, this was after spending a couple days with some KY & a big c-clamp to get the proper bushings into the eyelets...)

Chain slack should not make any difference, & you're correct about needing to support the rear wheel. A wedge might make the difference between needing a friend & not.

HTH,

New shocks are on!!!!

Got my buddy to lend a hand.

Removed both at once after putting board under wheel to support it. Used the floor jack to raise bike enough for new ones to slip on.

Test ride done and bike rides much better now over the bumps. My spine is very happy.
