The digital speedometer on my 04 Daytona 955i has an intermittent problem. About every third time I turn on the ignition, the speedometer readout indicates 0 and stays there when the bike is in motion. At first I assumed it was a short or bad connection, but now I realize if I turn off the key and turn on again, it fixes it, although sometimes it works with just the key on, but then does not after I start the engine.

Anybody know what to do, besides replace the whole instrument cluster?

Triumph diagnostic or TuneBoy both have a speedo and tacho test. When activated the speedo should read 112kph, tacho 4000rpm. Also check the torque of the front axle.
Have also found on an '02 Daytona, the seal on the speedo side of the wheel not seated fully allowing the drive dog to tip and jam. When the axle is tightened the sensor is under tension and reads intermittently.

Thanks, 93, I'll check it out, though I doubt that's the problem in my case since simply cycling the ignition on and off cures the problem, without moving the bike at all. But you never know, especially with electrical problems!

This is actually a bug in the ECU program. Go get an update installed. When the ECU sees that the battery voltage is low, it does this. Mine did it, and a lot of others. There are threads in the Daytona Deliberations about this bug. 2 fixes, keep the battery on a battery tender when not in use to keep it charged, or best solution, get teh updated program installed.

I already do keep it on a battery tender, and I ride it regularly, anyway, so I don't see how the battery voltage should be down, but I'll check into that, thanks.

The trick around this is to NOT wait for the fuel pump to prime and for the gauges to read normal before starting the engine. The glitch is when the ECU does the start sequence it looks for a certain voltage in the system, if it doesn't see a high enough voltage it disables the speedometer. Three ways to fix it. As stated, get an updated tune which turns off the speedometer check function, use a Tune Boy to do the same. Get yourself a new battery which will fix the problem for about 2 years then it will return. To avoid the issue, just turn on the ignition key and start the bike as soon as possible. DO NOT wait for the ECU to run it's diagnostic check before starting the bike. Once the engine is running the alternator will be on line and the ECU will see a higher voltage and not disable the speedometer. This WORKS! If it doesn't work the first time, (maybe it's colder where you live) let the bike warm up a bit so it's settled into a nice RPM, say between 1800 - 2200, and shut it off. Repeat the 'Quick Start' procedure and all should be fine. Basically you need the alternator to fool the ECU into thinking the battery is in newer condition than it is.

PS Been doing mine this way for just about a year now and works every time.

Not to revive a long dead thread but I just got my Daytona last week and this "cheat" works for me every time so far...:knocks on wood:...Hopefully it keeps working till I can get to the dealer for the update! Thanks much!

You can update it yourself for cost of inexpensive cable & TuneECU freeware (voluntary contribution)

Thanks DEcosse! Read up on it a bunch and my cable just shipped today. I'll figure it out when ever the cable comes-lots of info on that board so thats fantastic for newbs like myself!
