My poor old '00 Sprint RS has developed a slight hiccup. Doodling along at 120 (all metric) the temp alternates between 83 and 85 degrees C. Slow down to 60 - 80 the temp rises to mid nineties and stays there rising to 103 or so when stopped at lights. Temp takes a long time to drop. Coolant mix and level is good, fan works and there is no leaks/loss.

Has this happened to anyone else? Before I start stripping the old girl down to check thermostat, sensors, water pumps etc I would appreciate any feedback from anyone suffering similar.

It could be all normal as this is my first watercooled bike in twenty five years.

Perfectly normal .

my bike runs up to 215 degrees in traffic situations and goes down to about 185 on the road (you do the math)

The cooling sytem is designed to warm up fast and stay hot. Better for emissions you see. If the bike runs too cool, the fuel injection would stay too rich all the time, killing your mileage and believe it or not, your power output.

You should thank god you have a digital guage, because the analog triumph guages are not very indicative of the actual temperature.

A nice radiator flush and the addition of some water wetter couln't hurt, but don't bother with the thermostat or water pump.

Thanks for that. It was a little disconcerting to see the temp climb so steeply.

There's nothing worse than trying to fault-find something that isn't at fault.

If you are a bit paranoid, check your cooling fan, a few people have had the blades melt to the radiator core. The stock unit is a bit overly hefty.

Just to be safe, I installed an Aluminiuminumum fan blade from Muzzys.

cost like $23, and cools down the motor faster than the stock plastic monstrosity.

BTW, it's just the fan, and not the fan motor.
