Am going to be tearing down the engine of my newly acquired 96/97 model Trident.

I have purchased it knowing the sprag clutch is gone, and intend replacing myself.

How much should the parts cost?

I am intending to do the alternator shaft at the same time, what else should I be looking to replace?

At least the bike was cheap.................................

Look on the Classics forum. A related ongoing discussion there.

Search through the various threads on this topic.
Some have listed all the parts needed etc. The clutch itself is a little under $300.00usd here in the states.

How many miles is on the bike, is/was the battery in good condition - have you contacted a dealer or Triumph themselves - if not write the VIN # down for when you call/speak - you may get lucky!? It is a case split, many have done it and is possible, replace the alternator bolt and shaft, though yours is more than likely updated worth a cheque - the VIN # will allow Triumph/dealer to access the datbase for specifics.

Hi,

Does anybody have a copy of Service Bulletin 194, which covers the Sprag Clutch replacement I believe?

Thanks
Geoff

Thanks guys

Have got quote for parts from Ling's in Norfolk UK

£140.00 for the sprag clutch, just need to find out if I have 13 or 15 teeth!!

Triumph don't list a alternator rebuild kit, but I am sure I have seen one somewhere.

Genuine gasket set id a bit steep @ £130.00!!

Will keep you up to speed with my progress

Whoa on the gaskets! I've done this job on my TB and didn't need no stinking £130 gasket set! That's over $230!!

I bought the coolant system gaskets (two paper for the pipes that connect to the engine and one rubber one for the water pump). One each for the sump, and engine covers I think, and then o-ring seals for the starter and alternator. Cost was less than $40 IIRC.

You don't need to touch the cylinder block, or head.

I can check back on what I bought in more detail, if you want. Does a Trident have the T300 engine like a TB? 885cc?

Parrycm

I am intending a total engine strip, am going to renew the timing chain and tensioners, and presumed that I would need all gaskets.

My motor has done 39000 miles, and both the alternator and sprag clutch have gone. I have never heard the engine running, it was brought for £300.00 ($525.00 USD) as a project for the summer. I am unsure as to the standard of service, and as I have another bike Cagiva Navigator (with TL1000 v twin engine) I am in no hurry, just want to get it right.

I considered buying a second hand engine, but as I would not know what I was getting untill it was started, I thought I would do it all myself.

Fair enough! Sounds like a good project!
