The original sensor, made by Gill (English), lasted 33,000 miles. The next one, also a Gill, lasted 43,000 miles. Sensor #3, a PVL with a marking that says "West Germany" (Did the Wall come down in '89? Are these components 17 years old?) lasted only 9,000 miles. Sensor #4, installed last week is also a PVL. It is also marked "West Germany".

Odd isn't it? The English stuff out-lasting the German stuff. But....is all the PVL stuff pre-'89?

By the way, this is on a '98 Sprint 900.

I replaced my airbox & plugs last week, & noticed that my coils (replaced last July by the PO) are also marked "West Germany." My guess is that the dies or whatever used to make the plastic housings date back to the time of 2 Germanys, but the components are probably more modern. That's really no more than a guess, though, & I'd be curious to know for sure.

Cheers,
-Kit

It could be worse.... they could be marked "East Germany" and made by Trabant.

I have the PVL coils, I am hoping they are better than the infamous Gill coils.

J98Sprint, how many miles do you have on that Sprint?

85,110 miles. Going on a 2,000 mile trip next week so I thought I'd check the thickness of the clutch plates; not because there is any slippage, but because I have a new set in my parts stash. The plates are original and they all measured out to 3.8mm! That, according to the manual, is the thickness of new plates, the wear limit being 3.6mm. I measured the new plates in my stash, 3.8mm. I left the original plates in, even reused the original clutch cover gasket. Amazing.

The above clutch plate story illustrates the robustness of the entire bike. It still runs great, looks good and uses almost no oil. It is very dependable, good machines these T-300s. I also have the PVL coils in.

Hows things Slinky?

Pretty good, thanks.

Wow 85k is pretty impressive. It makes my 23k on a '98 look like it's just broken in.

I bet you are looking forward to seeing that bike go round the clock.
