Last year I purchased a 2000 Sprint RS. The bike has a few scratches on the right side directly below the seat cowl. I ordered the correct touch up paint from Triumph and am now ready to touch up these scratches. Any advise and/or tips to follow would be appreciated. Thanks. :???:

The only advice I can give is to shake the paint well, and if it is one of those little bottles-with-a-brush-in thingies to warm the bottle with hot water to make the paint a little thinner. I take out a mug of boiling water and leave it in that when I am between brush strokes. It helps the paint flow into the chips rather than doming up.

Best of luck

Don;t expect a perfect match in color. Although it will look better than the scratches.

Did you get a tube of the clear coat too?

Take the piece off the bike so you aren't painting on a vertical surface.

Clean the target area extremely well. Use acetone on a qtip for the affected area, and rinse and dry before painting.

I also have some paint maintenance to do. Question is can I "rub-out" where the paint is only marred and then fill in the gouges? Will the clearcoat match up pretty well?
What does one use to "rub-out" paint?

As far as "rubbing out" the damage, it all depends on how deep the damage goes. If the scratching is only into the clear coat I would just clean and wax first. If that does not do the trick, go get some of the finest polishing compound you can find at the auto or auto body supply store. Get the professional stuff if you can. It comes in big cans and is quite expensive, but you will use it over and over on every vehicle you own, and some you don't. Incredible stuff! Just as important is what you use to apply and buff it. I recommend getting some 100% cotton diapers. Always use two, one to apply and "rub", and one to polish. Always rub and polish in one direction, not circles. I find polishing along scratches workes best, not across. Use progressively lighter pressure, ending up with the clean diaper simply polishing.
If the damage is into the paint or even worse, the primer, you will have to touch-up first then add clear coat, compound, wax.
Good luck!
