The low fuel light on my 02 RS is on all the time. I think it is probably in the wiring harness but would like to check out the sending unit (or simulate) the sending unit 1st.

What sort of resistance values values should I be measuring across the leads?

Is it like most cars sending units, basically open circuit when full with increasing resistance as it empties. Or the other way round?

Charlie, if you think the problem is in the harness and not the sender itself then just disconnect the sending unit. If the problem is in the harness, the light will stay on because the short will still be in the circuit. If it goes out, get a new sending unit.

Check the float first. I had to replace mine on my 2001 st. The float is WAYYYYY less expensive to replace than the sending unit.

Well, I unplugged the sending unit and got the check engine light on and the low fuel light stayed on as well. Plugged it back in and the check engine light went out after a few warm ups. So my guess is the wiring is OK.

Dogma, I'll check into the float. I wonder if I could hook the float and lift it manually through the filler neck?

Negative, You will have to pull the tank off the bike to get to the float. Held on with four bolts and a rubber gasket. It's easy to remove just timely. Then you can just tip the float holder upside down and it will slide right out, if it's not stuck? You can also hook the wiring back up (once removed from the tank) to test the float manually by hand by sliding the float up and down slowly to check the connections.
