Help/Opinions Plugs from rough running ST

Hi guys. Pulled the plugs on our new for us 2005 sprint st that is running very rough. It has been sitting alot with only 4800 miles total. Fuel cleaner and fresh fuel did not fix. Found this - see photo. It doesn't look or feel like plug was loose, but washer could have been cocked. Does not look like combustion residue, but corrosion instead. Not sure if I can put in new plugs and button her up or if this means a much bigger problem. Hoping someone here may have seen before and be willing to share thoughts. Thanks!

looks like water in plug hole. it's probably rotted the coil cap and that could account for rough running.

I think so too. Everything was sealed though, so where could it come from? Is there anyway it could be coolant? I inspected the coil and did not see any deterioration. I also checked the resistance on primary and secondary sides vs. the others and it was similiar. Plug does look like it was firing at least most of the time based on color and deposits. One oops; after testing all three coils, I laid them down together. I'm not sure I can distinguish which was which. If the consensus is that the water was a one time thing and the misfire culprit is a coil, I need to go over them with a little more focus. Ideas?
Thanks for the help!!!

fit new plugs, put it back together and see how it runs. if it's ok you fixed the problem.

I did inspect the coils. One of them did seem to have some rust on the sleeve. I've cleaned it up and am looking for some di-electric grease to assemble it with as the other two look like a small amount of lubricant was used. Rechecked the winding resistance again with similiar results, but I am putting in the new plugs and will button up to see how it goes.
Thanks again

there is a drain hole on the left side of the head to allow water to drain off.... check it's not blocked.

Welcome, IN10SS. This is sort of a catch-all forum for random mechanical questions; you'll probably be better served asking about your bike over in the Sprint forum.

As far as this goes, you'll want to get a set of new spark plug/coil seals from your dealer or Bike Bandit or wherever. They updated the part to seal better in maybe 2007 or so. It was never a recall, but the new part is a direct replacement for the old one even back to the 955s.

(I assume the rusty plug is #1/left? If not, you may have a bigger problem.)

Cheers,
-Kit

Yes, the rusty plug is #1 and that coil had rust on the metal sleeve inside the body of the coil. I cleaned them all and checked that there were no open circuits. I did find a good used set from a 2008 that are coming, so if these don't work out, I have a replacement. I will also be checking that drain hole. Thanks to all for the help and the welcome! I'll post in the sprint section next time! Still learning my way around.

No worries. That's a set of seals you got from an '08, or coils? (If you don't get the new style seals, the #1 plug well will fill up again.)

Cheers,
-Kit

seals vs coils

Thanks, I'll try to find them separately!
