Sporadic MIL and Low Fuel Lights on 955i Tiger

Hello All,
I have been getting an occasional MIL and Low Fuel light (accompanied by a stall) on my new (to me) 2001 Tiger 955i. When it happens, the bike begins to cut-out and both lights (MIL and low fuel) illuminate, but within 1-2 seconds it clears and the bike runs fine. Granted, this has only happened a few times and I can go several hundred miles before it happens again, but it is troubling to me nevertheless. This appears to be an electrical gremlin and I was hoping that someone has experienced this before. Unfortunately, the ECM hasn't stored any error codes to help locate the fault. I read an old thread in which a similar problem was caused by a loose + battery cable. My + cable appears fine, so if anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them.

Here is what I have done so far...
Checked all fuse connections (look good)
Checked main relay connections (look good)
Checked + and - battery cables (they appear to be good)
Disconnected and reconnected the ECM plugs (problem still occurs)

In the meantime, I plan to disassemble the engine kill switch and examine the ignition switch. I will update this thread if I discover anything.

I have looked through the wiring diagram in the manual and am going to start tracing wires. Does anyone know where the alarm connector is on the Tiger? I cannot locate it. It appears that both the MIL and low fuel circuit share a common pathway through the alarm circuit (which I presume is a bypass since my bike doesn't have an alarm), so I would like to check these connections.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it could be a problem with the fuel tank sending unit. I had one in my Daytona 955i that bugged out. It would illuminate the low fuel light, and eventually tripped the MIL for a sensor to ground error. The engine never stalled, however, and the problem was solved after I replaced the sending unit.

Fuel sender was my first thought as well, but that would only explain the lights, not the stall.

CharlestonRider, did you check the battery cables visually, or verify that they were tight by snugging them down? You want to make sure they're tight with a screwdriver, not just your eyes. (Not saying you didn't, just want to make sure.)

The ignition switch would be my next target after that. I don't know the Tigers, but some of the Hinckley bikes are prone to issues with the wiring harness at the headstock. It's worth looking for exposed or broken wires there.

If it's worth checking the kill switch, it's probably worth checking the clutch and sidestand switches as well...

No idea where your alarm connector is, try asking in the Tiger forum. (Do keep us in the loop here, though, please.)

Cheers, HTH,
-Kit

I have located the Alarm Bypass

BombFactory and KitNYC,
Thanks for your helpful suggestions. I really appreciate your thoughts.

As for the alarm bypass...It is located under the tailsection (in front of the taillight). I wasn't paying close attention when I separated the connector, but I think the bypass connector was a little loose. So, I have cleaned it out and reinstalled it. Tomorrow I will start the bike and disconnect the bypass to see if I can mimic the symptoms I have been experiencing.

I will keep you posted.
