CB360 engine swap + clutch prob

So I recently swapped out a busted engine out of my 360 and it runs , drives and all the jazz. For some reason when I roll the bike backwards about 10 feet, I will hear a pop, then the clutch lever goes limp. If I roll it forwards 10 feet, it pops but in and the lever is good again.
I can drive the bike, shift it no prob. Ive adjusted the cable as the manual suggests and still no good result.Ive had the cover off again, honed up the push rod, lubed it up, still no luck.
Anyone got any ideas?

Disclaimer: I haven't done a Honda clutch yet, so I'm guessing based on my knowledge of old Brit clutches.

When you're rolling it backward and the problem occurs, is the bike in neutral?
Does the clutch perform well when you're out running?
No crunching or missed gears?
When you're rolling along and pull in the clutch lever, does it disengage immediately?
Does the clutch chatter when taking off from a stop?
Does the clutch slip when you're on the move and give it a handful of throttle (try this in 4th gear at a decent RPM)?

Remove the cover (is there one?) where the clutch cable connects to the actuator. Roll it back until it pops. Is the cable coming off the actuator?

When it the last time you lubed the clutch cable? Make sure there are no hard bends in the cable at all. The bigger, smoother the bends, the better your clutch action will be.

Remove the promary cover whole the clutch is "working." Pull the handle in, release it. Are the clutch plates moving freely and evenly?

Again, this advice is based on Brit clutches. I have a CB350, but I have yet dive into that one.

Thanks for the reply, the weather is poo up here right now and I have a wedding to go to so it looks like this is prob gonna have to wait until Sunday.

In that link I am looking at the clutch and left crankcase schematics. I was told that the clutch works very similar to the Triumph ones in the 60s.

Some things I can answer you though..
-I can shift through the gears when the clutch is actuated
-the lever becomes limp when I am in neutral and rolling
-it does not pop immediately , just within 10 feet or so of going backwards, I have not had it go limp while going forwards, everything seems to be good until I roll it back to get it out of the garage
-One of the problems is that I cant remove the cover because the cover has the adjuster in it, so it separates it from the pushrod as seen in the schematic. I have removed, honed and lubed up the rod.
-cable is good.
-I have heard that adjusting these clutch cables are a pain.

When I get back to it, I am going to clean it up and make sure all the pieces are there (like the ball bearing that pushes on the rod) and readjust the cable in a manner suggested by someone else. They dont seem to thing its as much a mechanical failure as it is a adjustment problem. Until now its just a pain in the butt because I am planning on selling the bike, its in perfect condition.

Thanks for now!

Solved

The problem was that the clutch actuator arm assembly was popping out of the housing of course.
The main problem with the clutch was that before you reattach the side cover, that houses the clutch assembly, you have to be sure that the adjustment lever arm starts in a default position less then 90 degrees. Basically you have to loosen the lock nut until the top spring releases/lowers the arm far enough so that the arm starts below the horizontal 90 degree line, and when you pull the clutch lever on the handlebar the clutch arm rotates up past the horizontal line and through past it for a smooth operating arc. I would assume that the motion limits the movement of the assembly and push rod so nothing pops out of place. Hope that makes sense.
After that was all done, I just adjusted the clutch as explained in the manual and away I went.
Thanks for all your help and advice.

I'll move this thread over to the Maintenance and Workshop forum which for a Honda may be more applicable for general information to all.

I'll leave a link from Biker Hang-out
