Triumph Daytona T595 w/955 engine

I just traded my car for a 1998 Daytona T595 w/ 955 engine. The bike has no oil pressure and it has had the head replaced. I believe it to be the oil pump to be bad. Now I am a mechanic by trade but I have never worked on a motorcycle. Does anyone have any advice they can give me or tricks that might help to make this job easier. The bike will crank right up....Maybe someone has an idea that may be something other than the oil pump???? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome. Are you checking the oil pressure with a gauge, or are you assuming it has no pressure due to the oil pressure light being illuminated? I would put a mechanical gauge on the engine to make sure it in fact has no oil pressure before doing anything with the pump. It could be something as easy as the oil pressure switch needing replacement (they have been known to go out).

In any event, if you plan on working on the motorcycle, I recommend getting a paper service manual through Bikebandit.com or a dealer; I don't believe there are any legal pdf copies of the manual available for the T595, but I may be wrong.

Thank your for your reply, yes the oil pressure has properly been checked, as I mentioned I am a mechanic I just have never worked on bikes only cars and diesels. The reason I know it is not getting oil pressure is because there is no oil in the filter. As for the book I do have the Haynes manual as it came with the bike when I traded it. I do have another question however, what is the possibility of the strainer being so clogged that is causing the oil pressure to be nonexistant. Do you think it is a possibility? Any help or advise you can give is appreciated. Thanks again!!

BillyJack, The strainer could be so blocked as to not pass oil, but that in itself is a bad sign. There isn't a way I know of where the oil pump can be manually spun to prime the engine for testing. If the oil pressure lamp didn't extinguish, or the oil pressure gauge didn't read pressure after a couple of seconds using the starter it's time to drop the pan.

So if I am understanding you correctly, my first step should be to check the strainer before I tear into the engine and change out the oil pump? If that is the case and the strainer fixes the problem it would save me alot of time (and headache...LOL) from having to change the oil pump....I will give that a try first thanks!!! Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

BillyJack, I looked in the service manual, there's no mention nor picture of the pickup or strainer. The Haynes may be better.

Good Luck
