Thruxton - Oil Change
I just bought a 2004 Thruxton and can't find any manuals online that have step by step instructions for changing the oil. Does anyone have them or know where they can be found? Thanks

Welcome, crousseau. Pick up the Hayne's book; it's $30-40 and well worth it. Also, be aware that this site does not tolerate copyright violations, so you may want to be careful how you phrase your requests for this sort of information.
Cheers,

Help yourself to the owner's manual, look at page 58:
http://www.triumph.co.uk/media/900.pdf
Get a Purolator Pure One 14612 filter or equivalent from any auto parts place. You don't need an "official" Triumph filter. See the manual for the type of oil to use.
Let the engine cool long enough that the oil won't burn you when it comes out all over your hand, it only needs to be warm enough to flow out at a reasonable rate. Wear some disposable rubber gloves. Let it drain for a while, maybe 15 minutes, while you fill the filter and retrieve the bolt and washer.
Don't overtighten the drain bolt, and you can re-use the washer a few times.
Put in no more than 3.5 quarts, then let it settle for an hour and check the sight glass, top off if needed; don't overfill it. If you want to ride right away, go ahead, there's enough in it and you can top off later.

I'm not saying your wrong but I have never done this with no problems. The Triumph factory manual does not mention it. I have seen that advice for dirt bikes but not these bikes anyway just wanted to say I do prefill the spin on filter with oil and carefully put it on so maybe that is the difference too but early on oil changes I didn't prefill and just dumped in 4 quarts of oil and no problems. I don't think it is critical.

I try to avoid overfilling. If I use four quarts, it goes over the sight glass; I usually have a few hundred cc left when I'm finished. You may well be right, it might not matter, I don't know.

It is best not to overfill, absolutely. The extra oil has to go somewhere...
Cheers,
