Get the rear wheel off the ground. Put bike in neutral, but NOT RUNNING! Clean chain with Kerosene and a parts brush. Wipe chain with a good bath towel. Then wash bike, lube chain and clean rear wheel with a rag and WD 40.

Bean Clean is really good... it's cheap, biodegradable, and smells good too.

Speed 3 Thanks for the advice sounds like a great process. I will try it. The brush is it a stiff nylon type?

Joemomma who sells bean clean? I have never seen it at any local shops?

Me neither, I bought it online.
It worked on my cruddy dirt bike parts and didn't stink up the shop and it didn't eat into the driveway like petrochemicals can.
I have no affiliation, I know I sound like a rep or something. I'm just happy when a product that claims to be green actually works.

There's also a brush called, I believe, "Grunge Brush." It has 3 heads at 90º to each other and cleans 3 sides of the chain at once. No affiliation, etc., I just own one and keep meaning to use it...

(I do lube every 300 miles or so, I just haven't cleaned this chain since I put it on in May? June? The Teflon lube seems to not attract dirt the way the oil I used to use did.)

Cheers,
-Kit

onthegas, I use an old toothbrush and WD40 (similar to using kerosene). Don't be tempted to use something harsh like brake cleaner as this detrimental to the O or X seals.

After cleaning apply your favorite lube, ride for 5-10 miles to warm the chain and reapply lube.

Motorex makes a good chain cleaner too (Motorex 611). I use that with the Grunge Brush/towel and their chain lube (either the Racing or the 622) and have been very happy with them over the years.

I actually used Kerosene and a shop brush. Worked like a charm! the chain was rusty on the rivets and just grimey. I could not believe how well it cleaned it right off.
I then used Maxima Chain Guard. I have used Chain wax for years and did not like the side effects of the fling. So we will see if this works any better. Chain lube tends to be like oil everyone has an opinion and experience with certain brands.
Thanks for all the help I will be looking for a grunge brush at my local dealer.
