well i dont want to sound a fool but can anyone help me on this- where do i check the valve clearences on my 1970 650 tr6r ? i know where the tappetts are i just cant get my feeler gauge under them !! am i doing this wrong ? can they be adjusted from the top of the tappet rather than trying to bend my feeler gauge to a snapping point!!

Do you have the piston on TDC on the compression stroke so that both tappets are on the base circle of the camshaft. If you can't slide the gauge in when the rockers are at their highest position, the valves are too tight.
