Chaining & Sprocketing

I haven't been here for a while - your group help sorted me out so well that there's been no need! BUT NOW I need advice on chain & sprocket replacement. Adjustment is now at its absolute end, and it's still a bit slack.

Dealer, Bro Cycle in Winsor, Nova Scotia, is offereing a chain & sprocket kit for the '99 Adventurer for about $300CDN. Original equipment drive chain and both sprockets included.

Any comments on whether this is the best way to go? I hate chain maintenance, so I'm willing to spend a few $$ to avoid it if there's a better slam-dunk way to do it.

thanx,
Townie.

Townie, If it's a X-ring chain, 520 or 530 and installation is included, a pretty good deal. A tad high if installation isn't included, but not badly.

For DIY without special tools, nothing beats an EK chain with the screw-type master link. JT sprockets cost much less than OEM.

As stated, that kit from the dealer isn't bad if it includes installation. IIRC, the adventurer has the same sprocket cover as the T3 series, so also requires a (shifter shaft?) seal and a gasket.

Front sprocket nut is 36mm, and it never hurts to use a new lock-tab washer.

Cheers,
-Kit

Also, if you're not aware- The chain should always have at least 35mm slack, as measured at the tightest spot on the chain halfway along the bottom run. No more than 40mm is preferred, but 45mm would be better than 30mm if you had to err in one direction or the other.

Cheers,
-Kit

For Canadian prices that is actually in line for oem. Ask about aftermarket chain/sprockets to save some money without sacrificing quality.

In Calgary an oem combo was going to cost me around $80-100 more than aftermarket (x ring) for what the parts guy said was better than oem (don't really believe better but equal)
