Dropped debris in oil fill.

What happens when the crappy oil fill cap gasket shears and 1/3 of it ends up in my crankcase (on my 1st oil change btw)? Stupid gasket gremlins!!!!

original tinman, Nothing good. Depending where it settled, it's either on moving parts or poised to block, at least partially, the oil pickup screen.

Drain the oil again, maybe it will float to the drain where you can grab it with needle nose plyers

I'm not sure what motorycle you have or if the oil filler is incorporated into an engine cover, but if you cannot remove the debris via pliers, claw mechanism, or through another oil draining, I'd remove the closest cover and dig it out before risking damaging the engine.

Hey guys: It's a 2009 Thruxton. I spoke to the service plebian at PJ's in albuquerque and the consensus in that shop (considering where it whent in)is that it's very most likely no big deal. Mike the guru was out today and unavailable for brain picking. After much thought I feel an occlusion issue would be unlikely but possible, mechanic insult to shearing surfaces or tight tolerance invasion I feel is not so much an issue. Mind you this is my backyard mechanic"gut feeling" I am in no way familiar with the oil webbing or vascular system of this engine. Here's what's left o' the crappy gasket, the rest of course is basking in the glory of my crankcase! Soooo whadoyathink?

Every mechanic and gardener in the world could give you his opinion about the chances of the piece causing issues, but the fact remains that there is a chance. It's easy to give advice when it isn't your money depending on it. It is likely that the piece will never get into the oil pump, or eventually be crushed up in the oil pump gears if it were to, but there is a possibility of it plugging up an oil gallery or causing other issues. As long as you don't fire the engine, you know where to look for the piece, and you can probably retrieve it by pulling a side cover or the oil pan. If you do take the chance and run the engine and it does plug a gallery up or interfere with moving parts, you will be dealing with a major problem.

If your engine had 100k miles on it, I'd be more inclined to say take the chance, but, if I owned a brand new engine, I would not take the chance. I think a $20 gasket and an hour labor is well worth the security of knowing you aren't going to do something to the engine that would require major work costing well over $20.

Decision

Well folks after much deliberation and careful consideration I have decided just to ride the beeotch! No problems thus far (100 mi.). I did consult with Triumph, they were very good about getting back with me, chalk up one for Peter @ Triumph and great customer service. The consensus is that it can be in pretty much 2 places. 1 in the transmission gears in which it will turn to mush and 2 in the oil pan and cannot pass the oil pick up tube screen. If anything funky happens I will certainly let everyone know. Thanks for the posts.

With all due respect, I don't agree that the dealer telling you to leave a broken-off foreign object deep in the bowels of your motor is such great customer service. But I wish you good luck with the bike.

Stop scaring the poor guy, it's only a piece of rubber. The danger of course is plugging an oil galley so you may want to install an oil pressure guage to give you peace of mind.

It is not going to get past the oil filter. I wouldn't worry about it.
