Changing sprockets is more complex than you think

Hi all.

Here is a link to an essential tool for anyone who is considering replacing their front or rear sprocket. OK, going from 18 to 19 teeth on the front is likely to improve your MPG, but is that going to increase your chain wear? Will changing your wheel size and sprockets increase or decrease your chain life?

I would recommend the following link to anyone considering replacing just the front sprocket and not altering the number of chain links or the size of the rear sprocket.

Generally, the larger the front sprocket the less wear, and you aren't recommended to go below a 15-tooth. The sharp bend radius and higher mechanical advantage of the small sprocket increases load and wear.
