How to remove cylinder liners

Anyone got any tips on removing cylinder liners from an engine which hasnt turned in years. I have had the head off (bust) but as the whole engine needs a strip down and rebuild i need to take the liners outs. Haynes says hand pressure only, i have soaked the pistons in oil, and used GT40 on the bases of the liners but now joy.. any one any ideas??

We don't know what model you are working on, so it is a little hard to be specific. For the open deck triples (955, 1050, etc.), Triumph specifies using a special "puller". If it was me, I would make a puller out of 2 hardwood pieces and a length of 1/2" all-thread. The liners don't give you much of a lip for the puller to bear on, but it should be enough. To make it easier, pack damp towels into the cylinder liners and heat the upper case in a 200 - 250 degree oven to expand the case bores.

Whoops, I should have read your post more carefully! You will have to remove the pistons before you can remove the liners. Removing stuck pistons requires lots of solvent and lots of patience. Oil is generally too thick to penetrate stuck rings, for that you need something with less viscosity (i.e. penetrating oil, diesel fuel, ATF, etc.). Just don't get in a hurry and start pounding on things.

Good luck!

Liners

The only thing holding the liners in is the sealant at the bottom. If you remove the rod caps and the pistons are stuck, use a block of wood to tap the pistons along with the liners out. Then when liner and pistons are out you can heat the liner and use a press to push the pistons out of their liners. If you work the liners a little back and forth at the top,you can get them loose.

Thanks for the advice, As I will have to separate the crankcase this seems the only way to go.

I am soaking with oil atm but all i have managed is to crack of the end of the metal peg which fits in the crank nut( the one on the RHS of the engine by the timing plate)... grrr.. i take it those just slot in and out?

And while we are at it i am trying my damnedest to get the swing arm bolt out. Both ends of the bolt undo but i cannt get it to budge one iota. The arm moves up and down as do the centrestand/engine mounting stays. I am giving it a fair wallop but not a bit of movement, any ideas appreciated
