How to Post a Picture

These are instructions for adding full-sized pictures (or TriumphRAT.net thumbnails) into your posts.

First, find the picture you want to put into a post. If it's on your computer, not the internet, you'll need to upload it to the internet. TriumphRAT's photo pages or photobucket.com are good places.

For pictures in a TriumphRAT.net album, you'll get a 'Linked Thumbnail' text block at the bottom of the screen that lets you put thumbnail links into your posts. Copy the whole text and just paste it directly into your post if you want a thumbnail. For all other pictures on the internet, right click on the photo, and select 'Properties.' In the middle of the Properties window, you'll find a line labeled 'Address (URL).' Highlight and copy the address.

If you are using photobucket, like the example above, you can also skip the right clicking, and go to the 'Direct Link' line and copy from there. It's at the bottom right of the picture above, just above the words 'Image Info.'

Now start your thread or reply. If you are set to WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing*, you should see a screen like this one:

The 'Insert Image' icon is highlighted in the picture above. Click on that. You'll get a new window like the one shown below.

Paste the image URL into the text block on the window. The window comes up with http:// prefilled into the text block; make sure you delete that before pasting. Then click on 'Ok.' You should see the image appear in your message body. At this point, you can preview the post, or just click on Submit, and you should see the picture:

Now is a good time to mention that you can only put four {actually, it's since been raised to six!} pictures in one reply (so I'm already at the limit in this post!), and smilies count toward that total too. Also, please don't post huge pictures, or four reasonable pictures side by side; it's annoying to other users to have to scroll across to see all of a post. 640 pixels wide is usually a good choice. No copyright images that aren't your own, and nothing gory or porny (see the AUP).

Happy posting, and keep the rubber down!

HiDesert

*if you aren't in WYSIWYG, go to your User Control Panel (second from the top in the Main Menu on the left of the TRAT window) and change to WYSIWYG. In the Control Panel, choose 'Edit Options.' The Message Editor Interface is down at the bottom, under 'Miscellaneous Options.'

Additional Example

As HiDesert said, a good way is to use the triumphRAT.net photo album. This example uses that.

First upload your pictures to your triumphRAT.net album (I am assuming you already know how to do that).

Have two windows open - the one in which you are making your triumphRAT.net post, and another one with the picture open.

Select the picture you want use. Underneath the picture is a column of icons:

There's a final icon underneath the "linked thumbnail" line at the bottom. Click on that, and you get two extra lines of code:

You can grab hold of the bottom line of code, and drag it (or copy and paste it) into the post that you are making. Your post will now have that line of code, something like this:

Now submit your post, and hey presto, as if by magic the picture appears:

Shrinking Pictures

Often pictures taken with digital cameras are very large files. It is best to shrink the file size down to no greater than an 800 X 600 image, of greatly reduced filesize before uploading to hosting services such as TRAT photo albums or photobucket.

There is a very convenient way to alter photo sizes, which is in the form of a windows powertoy. This is a little program you download for free from Windows, and it will add an extra option to your right click button.

Once installed, select the pictures you want to resize - either using an explorer window, or the windows based image viewer, right click, select the "resize image" option, and then choose your image size - no greater than 800 X 600 please. The powertoy then makes a nice, small size file copy of the image. The original file remains unaltered.

Very handy, very convenient.

Get the powertoy here:

Additional example

As with all things, there is more than one way to get your images into your post, here's another example using photobucket.

1. In your photobucket album, you will see many small versions of your pictures. Move your mouse arrow over one, and a little menu will drop down. At the bottom of the menu is a line called "IMG Code". Simply copy that line of code into your post, and your picture will appear when the post is submitted:

2. Also in photobucket, if you click on one of your small pictures, you will be taken to a larger version of the same picture. The same 4 lines of code are there. Again, copy the bottom line - the "IMG Code" and paste it into your post. When you click submit, the picture appears.

How to Upload Pictures to Your TRAT album

When you register on TriumphRAT.net you are automatically allocated an album to load photos to. The album is set up for you as soon as you register. You can also create sub folders within your album, but that is up to you.

This is how you upload photos to your album.

1. Go "Member Albums" - simply click on the link in the side bar (blue arrow in the picture below).

2. The next screen looks like the one below - it is the top page of member albums, and shows the most recently uploaded pictures by site members.

On the right hand side are several options, one of which is "upload photo" (indicated by the blue arrow in the pic below). Click on that:

3. The next screen is the one in which you will select your pictures. There are 3 bars (indicated by the blue arrow) that allow you to select a file each. Browse your computer with these, and select your pics. Once you have done that, click on the "upload/submit" button (indicated by the red arrow).

Note that there are some other options on the upload screen, which you should explore at your liesure.

4. You will now be taken to a page showing your newly uploaded picture:

Below the picture is a column of icons and various options - these can be used to paste the IMG code into your posts, as described earlier in this thread.

One of the buttons in the list of icons in this picture:

Is a delete button. Move your mouse over each one, it should tell you which one it is.

Picasaweb

Another option is Google's Picasaweb (http://picasaweb.google.com). It is nice because it will give you a link to a re-sized photo without you having to actually resize the thing manually.

When you are viewing a picture in picasaweb you'll see a "Link to this Photo" link on the right of the screen. Click on that link and you'll see several options appear. Click "Image Only" and select the size you want. Then cut-and-paste the "Embed Image" link into the the dialog you get in the T-Rat website after clicking the Insert Image icon. Done.
