Firs off let me say thank you to all the responses and "welcomes" if I am half as impressed with my first Triumph as I am with all of you owners and the bond of riders that is displayed on this forum I will be very happy. So in preparation for my 97 TB I went and got some supplies for some maintenance and with 8000 miles I figured I would change the air filter so I bought a K&N filter than I read in the owners manual that you are not supposed to open the air box or change the filter. Did I read this wrong? Am I OK to change it or should I just leave it alone? thank again for any info.

IMO you can open the airbox and toss the K&N in ( I did)
but while your at it you may want to turn your mixture/pilot jets out to 2 1/4 turns. The base setting from the factory is 1 1/5. Elsewise you'll get popping from the exhaust on decelleration. More noticeable of you have drilled/off-road pipes.

How hard is the mixture/pilot jet knob to reach? Does it mean disassembling the whole bike???? Or could a mechanical noob like me achieve total success on such an adventure?

You'll need to remove the tank and body panels. Then you have to remove the airbox and disconnect the carbs from the airbox and engine. Once this is done disconnect the throttle cable and horn. To get the carbs out you need to wiggle the airbox away from the carbs and pull that out, then you can pull the carbs out from the right side (found that easier myself).
I did this today, I left the choke hooked up and just pulled the carbs apart from there. I put in the 100mains and the 40 pilot jets that came with the kit and set the idle mixture at 2 1/2 turns. K&N recommends 2 but the idle was surging for mine. I also left out the secondary airbox. Doesn't really feel any faster, does have a throatier sound to it though. Overall the job wasn't to tough.

The stock air filter is not due for replacement until about 25000 miles, so you are a little premature.

For 53 bucks the K&N gives you a 4-5 hp boost and never (well almost) needs to be replaced. The engine will spin up thru the rev range quicker with the filter alone but tuning the carbs ( or re-jetting)at the same time would give the biggest performance gains. I think it was worth it. the 2 airbox halves are sealed by some tan gunk/sealer that if unuseable after the filter change can be re-done with silicone or some such for an airtight seal. not really a big project but the space is tight and if your not used to working on bikes then just go slowly and be methodical and you'll be fine.
