****thing won't rev

Has anyone got an idea why my 900 wont rev past 6K? Fine until then but it 'starves'. I have changed the plugs. Used to be fine until after a winter lay off.

If you haven't done anything except layoff for the winter, you may have some bad gas or something may have nested in your airbox.

Sounds like clogged jets. Did you use a fuel treatment over the storage period? You can try some "Techron" or "Sea Foam" fuel additive and maybe you will get by, but most of these cases require full disassembly of the carbs.

My buddy just bought a sportster that sat for 4 years... he had me ride it home and it had a similar problem, but it wouldn't rev much past about 2500 RPM. I ran great up to that, but it would "starve". It took FOREVER to get it home.

Mine did that, wouldn't break 4000, and it ended up being carbs due to sitting on the dealer's floor with gas in it. Warantee replaced them and made it new.

I had the same problem a few months ago. Everyone said, jets, carbs, fuel line was plugged up, it's the petcock, the gas filler tube paint chipping off...
It turned out it was a FARMERS AIRCLEANER. A mouse house in the airbox. The symptoms are that it gets worse. My T-bird wouldn't rev over 5,000 then a few days later 4,000. By the time I decided to take it in to have it looked at, I had trouble getting over 2,200 rpm's. (The engine would stall out at that point and it was tough to start). The nest gets sucked to the filter and clogs it more and more. There wasn't a mouse living in it any more. By the way the nest was huge, filling up almost the whole air box, (the guys at the shop saved it for me to see). 1,400 miles later, (last week), I had them put in a K&N filter and check the airbox, no more critter homes. My T-bird runs like a champ. Ron.

If you keep a light bulb on near the bike chances are that you'll never have the problem again.
Get one of the new compact fluorescents that draw about 11 watts and you'll never notice it on the electric bill.
Mice are nocturnal, so lights drive them away.

We had them in the tractor muffler, in the car's aircleaner, in the motorcycle muffler and under the car cover on our hobby car; not all at once of course.
All it took was a few lights and no more mice.

automatic mousetrap

You can also build an automatic mousetrap if your bike is stored in a building which gets snowed in for the winter. Look on the internet for mouse trap pail, or something similar. Basically, you use a 5 gallon pail with a lid which pivots easily, put antifreeze in the bucket about 1/3 of the way full, and set up a stick for climbing onto the lid. Mice step on the lid, which pivots and dumps them in the antifreeze. They don't stink, as the antifreeze pretty well pickles them. Of course, you could also put a piece of screen in the intake nozzle of the airbox, but if you have several items like tractors, etc., and no power to leave a light on, this works well.
