Hey, all..forgive the noob question...

I just ordered Nology coils from the recommendations on this Board (thanks!) and they'll be coming in three days.

I assume I have to take off the tank to get to the "guts" for installation.

Now, here's the noob question: is it a big deal to take off the tank? Could someone take a few moments to write a short tutorial on this?

I'd greatly appreciate it!!

run engine with petcock turned to off until most of the fuel is used.
stop engine.
loosen and remove fuel line from petcock
take off seat. and rh sidecover , disconnect battery.
two bolts hold the tank at the rear of the tank , undo them
ease tank backwards carefully and place in a safe location.
unbolt coils , replace
you may need to modify the connectors depending if you are using the nology leads.
jimmyj900 had a small diagram that he sent me detaling how to hack the stock ht leads to get them fit onto the Nology units.
If I was to do it again I would buy the nology leads and not hack my stock HT leads.
Start reassembling.

leave battery connections off until after you have the fuel line hooked up.

be careful putting the tank back on as it may pinch the hoses under the tank, you will see what I mean once you get this far.

Please someone correct me if my memory has failed to mention something I should have.

Thanks...I forgot to ask - are there any special tools I'd need?

Nope special tools, just a set of metric wrenches and allens.

I think Durkster pretty much covered it, I replace one of my coils last spring with a used one from one of the local shops here in Philly area. Just curious, how much did the Nology coils hit you for, they might be in my future...

$71 and change each, IIRC, plus $15 shipping for three day - CA to FL.

The rep who called me (I called before hours and left a message) was very, very helpful and knowledgeable. He stated he sells to Triumph owners alot. :-D

You might want some Torx bits too, my coils are held on by Torx head bolts.

When removing the tank you'll need to remove the hoses.

I unblot the tank first, then I use a little block of 2x4 under the rear mount of the tank to hold the tank up a little while I remove the hoses. Gives me a little more working room.

Jam a rag between the front of the tank and the headstock. That way your paint is protected when you lift and move the tank.

I just got back in from installing the Nology coils on my '99 Adventurer..

My thanks to those who responded and the tips they gave. Installation was easy with your input!

The Torx driver is #25, btw - you'll need that for the coil mount screws.

As far as modifying the Triumph sparkplug wires, all you do is use the little converter part in the coil package. Take off the round rubber protector on the Triumph part, insert the end of the connector into the converter, and use medium needlenose pliars to tighten - it fits together well and is secure. Then, you slide the angled protector on the wire and you are done!

EDIT: You must strip off the connector from the stock spark plug wire, then use the converter piece - making sure the thin wire that is inside the plug wire is in direct contact to the Nology coil terminal. Failure to do this will cause incorrect readings on your tach!!

Even though I just took it around the block it started immediately, strong, and smooth.

BTW, I took the opportunity to clean and polish the areas underneath the tank and seat while they were off.

I am a happy camper once again!!! :-D
