Well, I almost have my Legend back together after my minor dump a little while back. Was starting to get a little proud of myself because I was near completion on my first big job on a motorcycle, but now I've hit a snag ...

The original damage was done in a left side dump and I broke the shifter shaft. I read a few things where somebody hinted about going through the sump instead of splitting the crankcase, and said what the heck. I went through the sump, got the shaft out with no problems, and I replaced it with the new one and the quadrant is meshed properly with the gearchange drum.

But now here's the problem: It doesn't want to shift to the next gear smoothly. I had it elevated on stands for better access and the wheel had been turned (accidentally?) while in neutral. I don't know if this threw off some kind of timing or what. Now in order to shift to the next gear, I have to rotate the tire a bit (usually a few inches) until the next gear clicks in, and so on up through 5th. But then I have to do the same exact thing on the way back down to 1st.

The manual mentions gear line-up for four cylinders, but nothing about triples. Plus, I never actually removed any of the gears, linkage, clutch, etc. The only thing I pulled out was the shift shaft itself.

I'm going to post this in the shop forum as well, to see what kind of replies I get there. Thanks in advance for any help.

Crazy....

It sounds like you haven't actually finished the re-build? It's still on the stands?

To me, it's seems reasonable that you can't work through all the gears with the engine and gear train switched off and not rotating. I would expect to be able to do some of the gears but not all of them, without rocking the bike or moving the wheel.

Is the sump still off - can you see if the selector forks are engaged in the drum correctly?

Just IMHO....

You are right, I have not closed it up yet, because I didn't want to do all that before I knew it was shifting okay. Forks look good on the drum. It is also still on the stands. Thing is, it was shifting okay 1st through 5th without any tire movement before, so I thought I might have upset some alignment.

I am tempted to close the bike up and add the oil and try running her through gears, to see if it will sort of "reset" itself. Little worried though about shifting into gears if something is not in the right sequence (I'm imagining a harsh noise ...).

thanks.

Anthony
