Is the sprocket/sprocekt coupling supposed to just come right off the wheel when you remove it from the bike?

I have the haynes manual, but it is kind of vague in the tire removal area. This is the first time I have removed a wheel from a motorcycle.

I am taking it tomorrow to get a new tire.

While I've got you here, should I do anything to "break in" the tire before I re-install it in the bike. I was thinking sandpaper, maybe with the orbital sander to scuff it up a bit.

The sprocket comes away from the wheel with the piece that it is bolted to (Sprocket Coupling). Inside the wheel you will see a round rubber piece (Damper) you need to remove this and any spacers or stuff that could fall out and be lost.

Wabbit,
Perfectly normal for that to come off, check the runner 'cushions' inside to make sure they are in OK shape. As for breaking in a tire you should just take it easy for about the first 100 - 150 miles. Not hooliganism. after that you should be fine.

Put a little dab of grease on the rubber cushions to hold them in place for reassembly.
