Stupid question for you guys. I'm new to bikes and was looking to replace the chain on my 99TBS. The question is, do I have to replace the sprockets as well, they look pretty good but the chain is getting to the end of the adjustment marks(currently has 14,500miles). Don't have a lot of money to spend and would prefer not to have to buy sprockets if I don't need to. Any advice would be very much appreciated Thanks Fbird

It's difficult to say, really. My experience is that the back sprocket wears out sooner than the front sprocket. But you never know 'til you actually examine it.

My advice is to do a complete change. That way the chain and sprockets will wear evenly. A slightly worn sprocket can take a lot of miles out of a new chain in a short period of time.

It's not THAT expencive, is it?

Gotta agree with Tumbleweed on that.

Replacing the chain and not the sprockets will accelerate chain wear and make adjustment more difficult.

And, of course, an improperly adjusted chain wears faster.

If it's a matter of cost then a chain and sprocket set is a lot cheaper than two chains and a set of sprockets...

You really need to look at the sprockets and decide how worn the teeth are.

Most wear takes place on one edge of the sprocket teeth (leading edge on the front, trailing edge on the rear). If the sprockets are suitable you can turn them around and use them again.

If you want to save money in the short term, you could always buy a cheap chain for now and replace the whole lot later on.

If you're sprockets are fine, it is okay to replace the chain and not the sprocket. I know it is recommended to replace both, but I've never went with this theory. I currently have 30,000 miles on my TBS with the stock sprockets and am on the second chain...

I would replace both unless money is really tight.
As Slinky suggests you could get away with replacing only the chain if the sprockets don't look too bad.

The sprockets on our classic triples cannot be turned over and used that way.

Take a close look at the rear one and you will see why.

If you turn it over the sprockets will not be aligned properly.

Wow!! Wasn't expecting this many replies. Thanks very much for all of your input. Sounds like I need to just wait and replace the sprockets just to be safe. If any thing it's an excuse to go with a larger sprocket in the rear, give me a little more acceleration. Thanks again. Fbird
